Best Fuel?!

Hallo,
Any ideas on the fuel preferred by the old SUs in the P6?
My 2000TC has been a bit lumpy since I bought it, but could still cruise along happily at 70 with not too much bother, it`s slow speeds it doesn`t like much!
Yesterday however I took it out after a couple of days without use and it seems to start `hunting` when I get to the point of changing up, usually to 3rd and 4th, the `overrun`??!
It got so that I had to ease off the throttle and pick up speed slower, then I could change up through the gears with the `hunting` almost gone?!? Any ideas? Until I can get up to see Dave `Pilkie` Pilkington I don`t want to start taking stuff apart!
Cheers, Drew
PS. I will be in contact soon Dave!! ???

Do a search on this forum for loads of discussion on fuels.
Send me a private message with an e-mail address and I'll send you my article on Fuels and Fuel Consumption as printed in the P6 News and appearing on Alimorg's website (and updated since!)
Regards, John. (Just over the water)

Optimax is the best, by a long way IMHO.
My 2200 auto will pink on a long hill climb on straight 95 octane. Tank full of Optimax = Pink free zone. Hoorah!
Cheers

Last month's Practical Classics had an article on Tesco's selling petrol with increased octane rating - not that much more expensive either

IMHO I wouldnt use Tesco fuel either the norrmal or the octane boosted. I tell you for why...
As well as the 3.5 V8 I also run a Rover Sterling V6 and my wife runs a 1975 Mini 1000 Auto.
Whilst working in Cambridge on a contract I used to pass a Tesco petrol station. Because it was convenient I filled up with petrol there a few times. Around the same time I started to notice a significant drop in power and pinking when cold. I had to drop the box into sports mode to get up hills it was that bad. Thinking I had engine problems I booked the car in to be looked at. The next day I filled up at my usual Esso station as I wasnt going into work. low and behold problem went after a few miles. After a couple more tankfulls, the problems have gone. I mentioned this to my wife who informed me the she had started to fill up at Tesco when she went shopping in the Mini. The Mini was getting hard to start and was getting noisey. Again after Filling up Esso for a couple of Tankfuls Problems have gone and she now has a nice quiet mini again.
Speaking to a pal of mine who drives tankers as a contactor, and has driven for a few companys he told me that Tesco only buy the bottom end of the market in petrol, and he had heard rumours that the octane rating was so low in some cases that probane was pumped into the tanks to boost the rating. This might be just hearsay, but I can vouch that after using Tesco fuel fuel economy and performace suffered.
Oh and for the record, I only ever use Optimax in the P6.

We had a problem with fuel from a Tescos service station in Stirling a few years back.

Filled up the tank on my Ariel Sq4 with it and headed back to Derbyshire. The bike ran like a dog and pinked like mad on all the hills. I ended up stripping the carb by the side of the road twice to see if there was blocked jet etc. My sister was riding a 350 single and that had to be taken home in the back of a van as it would barely run at all.

Anyway after about 150 miles I stopped and refilled the tank at an independant service station... problem solved.

I kept a sample of the petrol from my sisters tank and contacted the service station but they insisted it was tested every morning and that there couldn't possibly be a problem. Might have persued things further but dealing with corporate a**holes like Tescos is like banging your head against a brick wall.

Best way to hit them is to not spend your money in their stores.
Can't stand any of them personally. They're all money-grabbing, land-grabbing, town-destroying meglomaniacs. Every little helps?
...........Yeah, right!

Have to admit I use Sainsbury's diesel and unleaded . Any tales about Sainsbury's fuel?
I recall back in the 80's I ran a Sierra with the 1.6 E Max engine and one of the big boys Shell or Esso was selling 4 star that made it pink like mad and struggle to get up hill
