Bit of a shock to find on ebay

I think any prospective buyer would need confirmation of the chassis number on that one. Great provenance if it is genuine but the roof (arguably the selling point) looks like it has seen better days.

How is that in any way related to a 1963 pre-production car? The base unit, panels, interior and engine all date from '74-'77 (or 1980's NOS) What parts are still on that car from a '63? I'll bet it doesn't have Dunlop brakes under there. I'm not entirely buying the roof story either. Wasn't there another white 2200 floating around that had 'the' prototype steel roof fitted? Considering that all the period literature on those roofs clearly specifies a fiberglass roof panel, it seems implausible that half the surviving roofs are steel. All the little dents beside the glass and the poor general fit suggest a home job to me. Not a bad idea, i'm inclined to try it myself one day. :D

Saw this one last night, it does look like a it needs a bit of work. Tbh it seems a bit of a 'mongrel' to me with bits and pieces from other cars, as kiwirover said what with all the work done what part of it is a 1963 pre-production car :? The only remaining part is the numberplate, the shell was new, surely you need the original for t to be the same car?. You may find its just the plate that has been transferred to this car :)

It does make you wonder how he managed to build a new car from a 1963 donor, (which he got the seats from) with new base unit, doors, many other bits and engine, and got the DVLA to approve it as a tax exempt vehicle?

Richard

It doesn't come up as tax exempt according to the DVLA.

Date of Liability 29 12 1991
Date of First Registration 01 07 1984
Year of Manufacture 1963
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2200cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour RED
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available
Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £118.25
12 Months Rate £215.00

Well, it does and it doesn't

It does say that the year of manufacture is 1963

Then gives you the amount you need to tax it :?:

And it's red

Is that how details appear for vehicles that have been off the road since before the introduction of the historic class? ISTR that you can't get the class changed until you apply for a licence.

Hi, things were a bit more lax back in the early 80s. He has obviously told the DVLA
that he has rebuilt it with a new body shell, much like MGBs and Land Rovers, so has
retained the reg number. The DVLA are not really interested in anything fitted in and
around the car. Nowadays if the underpinnings are the same type then it shouldn't
present a problem. Back in the 80s this was not done for monetary reasons, my guess
is it was done by an enthusiast with access to new parts.

Not sure now if this makes it desirable or relevant.

Wasn't there a song by Johny Cash about someone building a car from bits he'd liberated from the factory ?
This car reminds me of the Talago saga a while ago

This is quite a well-known car, and is indeed what it says it is.

In the early 1980's a lot of historic number plates were obtained by people simply applying for them, this is probably how he got the FLK plate on this one. The racer V8 which carries an FLK plate is of similar origin.

hi,
like nick said, it is what it says. i went to see the car and the owner who had it at the time, who was the guy that developed and put it in the car, it is the genuine prototype roof and like the advert says, was removed from the rotten early shell and put on what it sits on now. years ago i fetched a car and a trailer full of spares from someone who had legitamately bought a base unit from rover ( a series 1 ) and fitted it with parts which, shall we say he borrowed from rover and took him a few years to acquire the parts. it looked like a series two, but battery in front, series one bonnet, series 1 loom but most parts were series two.

if you click on his name roverscars you will see that he is selling a pair of clear front indicator lenses , i would be interested but not at the asking price of 100 quid , someone may be after them ,rich

If you rebuild a car into a factory supplied, brand new shell, then it remains as the same vehicle.

Vehicles that have been rebuilt using a mix of new or used parts

In order to retain the original registration mark:

•cars and car-derived vans must use:

The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt).

And two other major components from the original vehicle - ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine.
