Bother!!

got my freshley painted exhaust manifolds back on the car and put the pipe back on....getting ready to warm her up so can adjust the mixture and balance etc....only halfords very high temp paint isnt high temperature enough.....its gone from a lovely red to charcoal black!...have noticed its been running a bit rough until it warmed up....the paint on the 1st and 4th l/h manifold was still very much intact indicating it was no where near as hot although spark was getting to both and have new plugs in too???....any ideas??...so its all got to come off again and stripped.this time no paint!!

Assuming you have good compressions I 'd check the carbs as cylinders 1 and 4 on each bank are fed from a different carb from the middle 2 cylinders

the right side had the same effect too, although no where near as much of a contrast,i know i'm running very rich as £20 of fuel gets me 20 miles! If just one carb was running rich i guess it would be colder as is wasnt burning as effeciantly? Or is my o level physics letting me down?

Re: Bother!!!

I would tend to go along with that theory & you will probably also find those 4 plugs are quite a bit blacker than the other 4

Lean mixtures burn with higher temperatures than richer mixtures.

Standing in front of the engine,...the R/H dipstick side cylinders are numbered from the front 1,3,5,7. The L/H cylinders are numbered from the front 2,4,6,8.

The R/H carburettor feeds 1,4,6,7 while the L/H carburettor feeds 2,3,5,8.

Each carburettor and the pathways within the inlet manifold are totally isolated from each other, so each carburettor only sees four cylinders.

The correct designation of "Left Hand" and "right Hand" is always from the drivers seat, not looking from the front of the engine, so although what you say is correct the designation isn't, the dipstick side is the left hand bank, the bank on the drivers (RHD) side is the right hand bank. The same goes for the carburettors.

Sticking to this will avoid confusion when reading the Parts/workshop manuals.

I always use offside (drivers side) and nearside (near to curb), always the same depending what direction you face, down side is that it changes if you leave the UK.
