Bought some new brake lines but...

Hi.

Bought some brake lines today. I got the short and long rear flexible lines. All good BUT one of the threaded sections on the short hose is too long.

It's the short hose that joins the two calipers that has me a bit worried.

One end is fine:

But the other end:

Now I'm assuming that the head was spaced out from the caliper for a reason - maybe so that it doesn't interfere with the line below it. So do I:

a) take it back. Painful as the supplier is only open weekdays and is nowhere near my work.
b) space is out with some nuts (to fill where the red arrow is pointing). Will this even work?
c) Cut the thread down to say, the orange line. Again, will this work?

looks like it needs a spacer? wait for someone who knows what theyre talking about though ;)

Hi Geoff,

The shorter hose with the spring doesn't join the two calipers, rather it runs from the O/S caliper across to the fixed metal line. Were your hoses fitted back-to-front?

Hose with spring, body to first caliper, the other hose links the two calipers.

Ron.

Before doing anything else it would be worth confirming that the one you removed is correct?

If it is then I'd return the new one to the supplier and tell them it's not right. Otherwise they'll keep selling them and someone not as eagle eyed as yourself will end up bodging it to fit and that's never a good idea with brakes.

Dave

Th old hoses are correct. The new top hose in the picture is incorrect, aside from having the wrong end it is also too long. Your supplier has made an error.

From memory, the short hose was on the inlet on top of the (drivers?) side caliper and ran to a hard line on the passenger side caliper. That sound about right.

The long hose ran from the bottom of the caliper and joined to the body brake line.

I have to get my bike serviced during the week so I'll try and get it swapped over then.

I would prefer to cut off a piece of the threaded piece. The shape at the end is not needed as it is sealed by the cupper washer. I would prefer this over the nut or spacer solution

But as the end was never designed to seal on the flat face, shortening the thread and adding a copper washer is questionable practice at best and would still leave the hose a little long.

In any event, this isn't a case of it being the only hose left in the world. The supplier just gave him the wrong one and needs to swap it for the correct hose.

Vern,

If you at thye original hose then you will see that this doesn't seal at the end of the threaded part but it seals with the cupper washer. This is the factory designed sealing solution so i don't see why you cannot cut a piece of the threaded part

Because the flat face on the fitting that the copper washer would seat on (on the incorrect hose) was not intended to be used as a sealing surface, so it's machining may not be suitable. I have seen this sort of thing done with success, but I have also seen it done unsuccessfully.

I'm all for a bit of improvisation but the consequences of modifying brake pipes and then being involved in an accident don't bear thinking about
I was going to comment on one of the Practically Carsick regulars using PTFE tape to cure a leak with his brake light switch the other month but I never got round to it

Swapped them over today. I got one with the correct ends that is slightly longer than the old one. Should be ok.

Actually, now that I do look at them...

stuff it. I think I'll take it back as well. It looks too long!
