Brake master failing

Can I ask some advice, looks like I'm the impending owner of an "N" reg P6 2200 TC which is challenged in the braking department.

The pedal is sometimes there and then sometimes drops to the floor, I'm assuming that's master seal failure.

What is the best thing to do here ? I have re-sealed masters before but is it better to replace the unit... can anyone recommend a good supplier, rough costs etc.

Also going to need a nice leather interior if anyone has one not too far from Boston, Lincs area!
Thanks

It's always worth re-rubbering first if the bore looks o.k or will take a light honing. You can pick-up kits on ebay cheap but they're not expensive anyway. Any decent factor should be able to get you one or you're in the area of Weekleys (01205 870805) who can sort out your Rover needs. Last listed prices I have are £8.95 for a kit or £108 for a cylinder. Both + VAT.
You can see the difference.

I bought kit a few years ago from J R Wadhams for the master cylinder. I am pleased with the results although I used kit for all the hydralics at the same time. It turned out I only had a leak in the rear brakes,

I would recommend checking the rear brakes by unbolting the dust cover to see it there is a leak as it is very common.

I think the kits worked well but would also recommend replacing the rubber hose which goes from the fluid resevoir to the brake master cylinder as this can weep and make you think you have a leak or problem elsewhere.

Also have you considered a change of fluid?

Thanks for your replies, I have yet to properly inspect the car & will check for leaks everywhere. I hadn't realised Ray Weekley was on my doorstep... might become a frequent customer over the next few weeks!
Cheers

I was at Enfield Pageant yesterday and one stall was selling new boxed P6 V8 single circuit cylinders for £65. Oops I think I missed a bargain there because I need one - yet ran out of cash, thinking never mind I'll buy one later from P6ROC suppliers like Weekley's...

Is your loss of pedal while stationary or moving ? If while in motion, check the adjustment of the front wheel bearings as if they are well loose ,the disc runs out of true and kicks the pads back so next time you brake the pads have to travel a long way before they meet the disc.

A point to watch is the brake servo vacuum pipe. Somtimes they collapse inside, resulting in a very hard pedal. Quite common on 240 Volvos.

late post on this thread but here goes:

I've got a new master cylinder (single circuit) for £60 all-in. Is this a good price? It's from a known Beaulieu/Enfield etc stall holder. Is this Lucas/Campter different in make and quality from the Weekley-sourced item?

I'd only buy brake stuff from a source you can go back to--- just in case.. just fitted 4 new pistons to the front of my 2000 at the weekend - supplier has large stock if anyone needs them drop me a PM they were £14 each, the only problem I had was the seal kit
1 seal was wrong blooming size- piston would not go down bore!
the outer gaiters, slighty different design but only keep crap out were a total pain to fit! next time probably get that bit from weeklys - pain if it turns out to be same!

Got the same problem after passing MOT in May and putting vehicle P6 TC up for sale, which has caused a minor blimp, although we bled brakes and thought matter was resolved !!
Vehicle remains for sale to good home and buyer.
