Budget hydraulics

Among the teething troubles of UEY was the usual difficulty bleeding the clutch hydraulics followed by an annoying tendency to draw in air after a few miles. This turned out to be the flexible pipe's lower connection, but before realising that I stripped down the new slave cylinder to check the seal.

Looks a bit basic:

The workshop manual shows an extra 'filler' and a tapered spring rather than straight sided one:

I still had the remains of the old cylinder and a genuine Lockheed seal kit so rebuilt the cylinder using the correct spring, filler and seal. The budget seal wouldn't have sat properly against the filler as it had a protruding bump on the back.

Now perhaps I'm just being fussy and the unit would have worked perfectly for years. But if you've seen these for sale and wondered how they're built down to their price, now you know. The casting and machining itself seems excellent quality and there was no sign of any swarf left in the bore.
