BW 35/65 - Sloppy Selector Stick - BW 35/65 - Sloppy Selector Stick

Hello chaps,

Something that is in the process of happening..and I 'd like to get sorted before something really goes wrong. I think it's merely a case of wear, but...

The selector stick on my 72 3500 is getting very sloppy indeed. You can waggle it form side to side. It still selects gears ok, but there is no doubt it is geting worse, and doesn't select the gears as smoothly as it used to. The gear box is fine, everything is smooth there, but I'm concerned that one day the stick will just come away in my hand!

I've also noticed that the noise from the transmission itself is getting louder, but you can "cure" it temporarily by putting a hand around the base of the stick...it is almost as if some kind of sound absorbing material has come loose or fallen away. It's a sort of whirring noise.

The whole thing sounds to me like old age...the car's, not mine!! Any suggestions or previous experience would be welcome. Is it a box-out job, or can I attack it from underneath or from within the cabin?

Cheers,

Rick

The wobbly shifter is caused by the collape of a plastic bush in the base if the shifter assembly. It is orange and is retained by a couple of pins to secure it to the shaft. To replace, get a new one (obviously). From memory Scotts Old Auto Rubber in Victoria does a new one. Carefully remove the centre console, hopefully not destroying as I did. The selector assembly can be seen on the top of the tunnel held on by 4 nuts. Remove these and it is just possible to see the mechanism underneath. You will need to get oily and release the rods from underneath before being able to disassemble the unit and replace the bush.
Its a bit hard to describe the job but once the thing is in your hand there should be no problems fixing it. :;):
Can be a bit fiddly, especially getting the handbrake boot off, but take care and you wont have to go get a new one like I did!!!!
If you find that the gearbox has come out you have undone the wrong bolts..... :(

S&G Walker in Chelmsford has new complete selector sticks. I don't remember the price but it is not that bad.

I have changed the selector on my car, and is was not hard, as Guy writes.

Thanks chaps,

Sounds like it may not be the disaster I thought it may be. Guy, I'll contact Scotts and see what I can come up with. I also have a first-class mechanic who loves the car if I run in to trouble!

Thanks agian,

Rick

Hello Chaps,

Problem solved..well...erm...sort of!

Scotts sent the part promptly (which was good seeing as they were in the middle of a move!) and Paul, my mechanic fitted it, as I have no facility to get right under the car. Even with the hoist it was fiddly..not like shown in the ROM which shows easy access!

Most of the slop has been taken out, but its still not as firm as I'd like it to be. Perhaps it's the age of the car? I did notice that the diagram in the book was again nothing like real life. The diagram shows a sliding "shield" which moves with the stick. This shield seems to be fitted in a fore and aft slot and I would imagine that, with the stick being able to pivot at the control rod end, it would limit side-to-side movement. My car has brushes rather than the sheld and allows a fair bit of movement. Maybe they were just made that way?

Comments anyone? Meanwhile, thanks to all those who advised throught his forum

Cheers,

Rick
