BW 35 query

I recently changed the gearbox on my V8 P6 from a BW 35 267 to aBW 35 303, I understand there are differences between the two and after looking at the throttle linkage i'm wondering if there was a 303 fitted originally, is there any other way of telling? i'm concerned about the compatibility of the two, the 303 seemed to go in ok without too many problems.

Externally they're both exactly the same. The 267 was introduced so that it was the same box in the P5B & P6B, and the 303 was just the last development of the 35 box in V8 Rovers. I could list the differences but TBH there's not much point.

The chances are that after 40 odd years they weren't proper 267's or 303's anyway.

One thing I did notice was the kickdown cable being longer on the 303, I imagine that the cable will need checking & adjusting, but is it possible for the diy mechanic to do this. I understand that the cable also controls pressure within the gearbox so I would imagine any adjustment to be critical?

The cable should be exactly the same length on both the 267 and the 303, the only difference was that the 267 had a crushable crimp and the 303 had a solid one. There were only 2 lengths over the entire range, the short 267/303 that went to the bracket at the rear of the N/S cylinder head, and the long one that went direct to the N/S carb, and that was only used on the early cars with HS6 carbs. Eventually you could only buy genuine boxes in 303 spec so all cars that had one got converted to use the short cable.

Cable adjustment is important. What you need to aim for is smooth engagement of DRIVE/REVERSE, a kickdown that works, and upchanges that don't need to be prompted by lifting off the gas, or occur too early. When you get to that position you should find that the changes are occurring within the ranges specified in the book.

Thanks for the replies, informative & appreciated. Am now looking forward to getting in the garage.
