BW65 grinding noise?

Just got back from the boarders meet at thirlstane and my attention has been drawn to a noise that appears to be coming from my gearbox. It sounds like the noise you get when brake pads rub on rusty discs. It only happens once you've selected drive and then gets louder and more intense as you pick up speed. Apart from this the boxes works fine.
Any ideas
Cheers
Rich

Is the noise there: A) at a standstill in "D", or B) only when the car is moving.

If A, it's flexplate/converter/front pump as they are the only things that will be moving under any sort of load.

If B. it could still be all of the above, plus noisy internals in the box from the pump backwards, the most common cause being the gearset, which will be worst in FIRST and SECOND, and quieten down in TOP.

Hi yeah it is as soon as you put into drive without even touching the throttle. just dropped the oil its pinky black guessing not good.
Going to put some fresh in and see what happens. I read the link this morning about how you should check the oil level I have never done that. I have always just checked it from cold not running on the drive. It was always half between full and empty. I have now read up and armed with this knowledge 6.8ltr (12pints) of fresh ATF G will be purchased tomorrow and I will eliminate that first
Many thanks

Tried Gearoil ATF G and promptly over filled the system so now got more oil over my drive just to keep the missus happy.
Also found why the level was low because if its filled above the sum gasket it leaks! well no so much leaks as pours joy. Put that one on the todo list
How ever the noise has not gone. It so guessing one of the above.
It sounds a little like a release bearing that clearly been an auto it does not have think I will leave it till winter when the engines coming out so I can make my engine nice and shiney

Leaving it for now may well make it easier to find when you do take it apart. And the oil will stop your driveway going rusty....

 does it matter that it has a little to much oil in it at the mo? Though I can not help but feel it will not be for long

Like you say, if the sump is leaking that badly it won't stay overfull for long. It may dump some out of the breather as well.

Just replacing seal on sump but do I need to change a filter or anything while I have the sump of the gearbox? Found a little magnet with loads of sludge on it what's that? Any tips cheers all

While the sump is off you might as well replace the filter.

The magnet is there to collect debris that's suspended in the fluid, so just clean it and put it back.

Ok just so I don't break anything just clarify its it the L shaped thing with the gauze on the front? Is there any word of warning I need to know
Cheers

Looking from the top:

Think that's it coming from the bottom it looks similar but looks like there is a rubber gasket. You know how it is you remove a screw the hole thing falls apart and no idea how to put it back. So as long as no surprises like that looks fairly easy
Cheers

Turns out jrw think this is a bw35 box with the gun shaped filter taken it out there does not appear to be a paper filter just like a mesh wire sort of affair :? Tell me the little magnet that's attached the bottom of one if bolt that seems to collect all the sludge do I need it!!! I lost it oops

You should have a magnet in there to collect all the metallic debris that ends up floating around in the fluid. If you've still got the sump off then any similar magnet will do, or I have the proper ones. If the sump is back on and you really don't want to remove it again then I have heard of, and seen, magnets araldited to the outside of the bottom of the sump itself, but I couldn't condone that type of behaviour....

:D not got it back together yet guessing it will be kicking round the garage floor somewhere. Thanks for all your help lets hope it works when I get going again
