Bygone Autos Rover P6

Exellent!!!!,.. 8) ...but i can't help thinking that if he hadn't cooked his tyres drifting round every corner, he might have actually won the race

I get the feeling he's either showboating, or they really need to look at the rear end on that car !, that's certainly not the fastest way round that track, mind you everybody behind will think twice before trying to pass him !

Great clips 8)
Funny how he was driving it like an Escort but the Escorts were tidy as you like

Takes me back to my RS2000 days :D

I agree! Something seriously wrong with the set-up of that car.

Rudiger has a photo page of the car's prep: http://www.ruediger-wicke.de/Fotos/VisitorGallery/BygoneRacer/Bygone_racer.htm

Presuming he has an LSD in it then the rear roll stiffness is far too great relative to the front - cue a major upgrade of front anti roll bars. If he hasn't got an LSD it needs one! The photo on Rudiger's site appears to show a large capacity V8 ready for fitting - 4.0 or 4.6. There ought to be no problem matching the horsepower of that winning Porsche andsorting the front roll stiffness should see it well competitve for an outright win.

IIRC the car has a Jag rear end fitted. I don't recall the motor specs but I have the article at home so I'll have a look tonight. I believe the car was built for the Targa rally (www.targa.co.nz) which is an annual event that travels across the country using a couple of race circuits and a lot of road courses and features a wide variety of cars, mostly classics. 'Skid' Mark Parsons is known for his crowd pleasing driving style and usually campaigns a Triumph TR7 V8 that is a virtual twin of Mal Clarks Rover. I don't know how competitive the car is but he seems to be having fun and it's much more entertaining to watch imo. :D

Looks well set up to me, balanced, controllable, even when messing about and others are trying hard around you 8)
Looks to have an LSD to me aswell the way he's lighting it up everywhere :)

Well, the magazine article isn't especially helpful about the specs of the car. It suggests that the motor is still a 3.5 :!: but with forged pistons, dry sump and four Webers. It does have a Toyota Supra 5 spd gearbox and a Jag lsd but still uses the de dion setup, albeit with adjustable top links and outboard discs. The article was written in 2004 not long after the car was built so who knows what the current spec is.

KiwiRover,
saw the car in 2008 and chatted to Malcolm Clarke at his workshop on the North Shore, specifically about the Toyota 5speed conversion, but I was given a rundown of the Orange beast and allowed a good look over it

I would also guess 3.5L is somewhat "tongue in cheek" as NZ regs. about raising displacement require certification he likely can't be bothered with....

I have the same article, and I would say the spec. was unchanged then as his car had already gone through decades of development and Mal prepares a lot of the "Targa" entries and said: "too busy working on other peoples cars to work on my own" when I asked him if he had plans to change anything on it

Before anyone tries the P6 drift at home; underneath Mals car doesn't bear much similarity to any other P6 I've seen, adjustable rosejoints everywhere on the suspension and the fuel plumbing was a work of art in itself; a very clean and quite brutal looking P6!

Mal used to be a P6 specialist, and even knew the P6B I'd bought from it having been previously in an Auckland car collection
and was able to tell me a little of its history as he had serviced the car at some stage
"but people don't spend money on them anymore" he commented, so he had diversified

Mal is very friendly and approachable for any P6 owner needing advice on modifications, he's likely forgotten more than most people would know. If you need him to do any work tho', book well in advance
