Camshaft: OE replacement or aftermarket.

As you se in my "bend pushrods thread" i´m in need of a new camshaft and timing gear, but what shall i buy?
As i have some other cars the P6 will only be driven maybe 2000 miles/year so if it lasts 50000 miles it will last more than the rest of my lifetime, this means that "the worst" maybe is over the top.

We have the expensive kit:

And the budget kit:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-V8-3-5-3-9- ... 3caaf26753

The last one is half the price of the Piper kit.

I do not want to buy headers, new intake and 4-barrel carburator, my goal is to make the best on the lowest budget.

Is there other any other stock cams that are a little hotter than the one in my ´74?

i've heard that a standard 3.9 cam is best in a 3.5. Someone more experienced in this will probably be able to explain why!

I would use the budget one for ease of fitting.

You won't get much more power just changing the cam if you don't want to upgrade everything else.

That budget kit is very cheap and seems to fulfil all of your requirements.

In your position, I would uprate the oil pump at the same time.

It is all to do with valve timing and the over lap increasing the capacity reduces the "wildness" of the cam. For example
going back to my Anglia / Cortina days a fast road cam in a 1500cc engine becomes full race in a 997cc engine.

Hi Preben,

I used a 3.9 Efi pattern cam from Rimmers - >clicky< - this page lists both the pattern cam ERR5924P and the OEM cam ERR5924. You can see the OEM is around 3 times the price.

I did fit the JP Performance billet steel timing set from RPI, as I feel the original design is a bit suspect anyway.

Check out my thread from last year - http://www.classicroverforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5133 where we had a bit of discussion going on the relative merits of OEM and aftermarket cams.

Cheers,

I'd think I'd go for the budget option in your position too. I wish I'd seen something like that when I did mine last year (roughly in parallel with Vaultsman).

I spent ages looking into different cam profiles from different manufacturers, all of them seemingly offering the moon on a stick, the holy grail and perpetual motion guaranteed with their cam but to be honest I not sure now if the increased performance isn't just as a result of overhauling the engine in general.

Read Vaultsmans diary thread as it will help you loads and make sure you don't leave small parts (like the crankshaft oil thrower) on the bench after you've boxed it all up.

I just ordered the budget kit, but with camshaft for 3.9 EFI, and they even had the pushrods i need to a very reasonable price, noww i just have to wait for the postman to come next week. :D

Well done! Now best of luck with the work. I hope the weather is a bit better for you than it is here in the UK!
