Carburetor rebuild...

Hello to one & all... On my beloved 1974 P6B I need to have the carb's rebuilt (well one definitely needs doing so I thought I'd be better to get them both done at the same time) and I would like to know who's the best person (in the London/Surrey area) to do them? I'd rather have my originals re-built than replace them. Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. All the best.

Have a word with Stan (Vaultsman) and do them yourself. They're not difficult, and Stan has lots of pictures.

Cheers,
Bri.
If you're out there Stan please do drop me a line, the old beast's running rougher than a hedgehog on a piece of sandpaper...!!!

I'm about to undertake this too ) ( this weekend all being well)

I've took apart carbs on other cars before, but never an SU, only weber and GM carbs...

I'll let you know how i go! i could take some pics on the way too ( always good to remember how they go together again anyway :O))

Good luck sir...! I look forward to seeing the pictures...

thanks :O)

I'll let you know how it goes - Usually it's just a question of being organised from previous experience with carbs...

I would certainly have a go yourself. I'm no mechanical expert but have rebuilt a pair before. As has been said, just keep organised & methodical.

I found that it truly transformed the car! :D

I sure hope so!

unfortunately the rebuild kit hasnt turned up yet... Even if it doesnt turn up tomorrow morning i'll dismantle it and clean it this weekend anyhow...

Rich.

Well the kit didnt turn up but i managed to get the car running at least. Think its a result of the over full oil in the engine so it's breathing really heavily forcing loads of oil through the carb. had a few backfires getting it going!

so carb rebuild is going to wait till next week i think!

I've got a good set of second hands carb's coming so once they're fitted I'm going to try my hand at re-building/overhauling the original ones... I'm not really that good with tools but I suppose it's best to give it a go...!!!

I just took the top off the float chambers and it was much less fiddly than i imagined! Definitely going to do the rest of it as soon as i get the kit in the post.

The air filters are that oil sodden that it wont run right so it's staying put till i give it a new air filter. I also emptied a litre of oil out so it's no longer over full so hopefully it wont blacken up so easily now. Getting an engine off ChrisW to put in for now so then i can sort the engine that meant to be in there in my own time! it shouldnt be breathing that heavily i dont think.

We'll soon see...!

Hi Dave,

The oil i emptied out didnt seem runny(exactly the opposite in fact - but it was only a litre!) and i dont think it smells of petrol... i'll keep an eye out for this though!

I think i may have figured the problem out though - the breather from the back of the engine was missing the filter which was letting loads of oil through because it was overfilled and connected straight through. The damper on one of the SUs is sticking slightly although it seems better after making it travel its full length. The float on one side had a mildly bent metal bar ( the one that its attached to ).

I think i need to try all these things along with the breather filter when it arrives and the new air filters i've got ( which i dont want to use until i have the breather filter.) and see how it runs then. At the moment i have the carbs running fine until i attach the air filters when it goes all lumpy and horrible. i think they're just way too gunked up with oil...

Thanks for the suggestion!

Rich.

WEll so far so good - only problem i seem to have is a mismatch between needles and i've mailed Ian about that so hopefully i'll be doing something silly. I'll put some piccies up later. The hardest bit was cleaning off old gaskets and getting to nuts to disconnect it. pretty straightforward apart from that...

That's the method of setting the float height so doesn't neccessarily mean anything's wrong. You'd have to measure it per the workshop manual.

that's good - the gaskets were mostly shot hence the smell of petrol i think - just took it for a test drive round the block and seems a little better. Just need to get the needle sorted and 1 of 2 carbs is done!

On the bad side just as i pulled into the drive the yellow bush that links the throttle arms snapped...

Ho hum! back on the bike this week then!
