Carrying bikes on a p6?

Has anybody found a good solution to carrying bikes on the p6?

I'm looking at replacing the 75 tourer soon, and i love the ability to shove the bike on the roof. Would be ace if there was a safe way to transport a nice bike on the p6 somehow... so i can have something very different as car number 2...

If you are talking about an ordinary full sized adult road bike, you won't get it in the car or the boot even if you take both wheels off.

Maybe Ethel's boot space is more constricted than most because of the sunroof motor but I don't think it would make any difference without the motor in the boot.

I came to the conclusion that it wasn't fair on either elderly vehicle to even try taking the bike in the car but when I got the roofrack - an official P6 roofrack, no less, the bike was just fine on its side on the roofrack.

I'd originally planned to modify the roofrack to convert into a special bike transporter but once I realised it wasn't just any old rack, I smartened it up without modifying it.

I have an old roofrack with the centre removed to leave just two bars running across the roof, clamped at each end to the gutters. I use these carry kayaks, bikes, ladders or whatever, though care is needed with bikes as the pedals could scratch the roof. The bars can be removed in a couple of minutes and fit inside the boot.

Hi guys , this is interesting , i'm in the market for a transport system for the mountain bikes ans my restored steelies , I was thinking of the racks that fit to the tow bar only and don't touch the car in any other place , you can still access the boot with it in place too . I have examined a few in car parks and they look good . Have a look on ebay . Assuming you have tow bars , i thing it would be worth fitting one if not . A couple of pics of some of my fleet , this will start a forum war , cycle talk always does
Any hoo , off on a 50 miler charity ride , that's why i'm up early :D

Cool - some good stuff right there. Rover invented the bicycle as we know it. Combining the two is a perfect forum discussion.

Yes i'm thinking of my road bike. Did another triathlon yesterday and just putting the bike on the roof of the 75 with it's roof rails is dead handy. It's the only reason i need such a large car though...

maybe taking the tow bar off chewbacca and patching it up with the welder is the answer :)

Hi Rich,

Your bike frame I expect is either aluminium alloy or more likely carbon fibre. That being the case, these are not suitable to hang from the toe bar mounted bike rack that Stina mentioned. You'll need to either attach it to a bike rack on the roof, or remove the wheels and pop it in back. When I was racing a steel framed bike in the mid to late 1980's, I would hang it on a bike rack which was mounted on my Rover's toe bar. I'd remove the front wheel and turn the handlebars till they met with the top tube. Piece of cloth in between and a toe strap to hold things nice and still, worked a treat.

A bike will fit in the back, provided you take out the rear cushions  I know, as that is how I carry mine :)

I bought a bike carrier from halfords years ago. It has two bars that looks very similar to this

I have successfully adjusted it to fit a Mazda 121, a megane2 cc, a Vauxhall viva HB and my p6! On the booted cars I adjust the angles so that the rear bar has a more shallow angle so that the weight is more vertical falling on the bumper and rear deck rather than pulling on the straps.
I only drove to Rutland water and back which is 30 mile each way of some right twisty stuff and my MTB didn't move. Just make sure tie up a pedal as could turn on crank and scratch the boot!

I'm pretty sure I still have a rack very similar to that. I've not used it on a P6, but have used it on various Hondas and even a P5B IIRC. I might well be prepared to part with it for some of the required folding stuff if it's still here.

I have one like that. i didnt dare put a £1000 bike on it though once i'd read the instructions which say not to use above 50 mph which means its not secure enough in my mid?

I never read the instructions, but I never had a £1000 bike....

This is the sort of thing i mean ,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bike-rack-car ... 2a4261e04f

it bolts to the ball hitch and doesn't touch the car any where apart from that . The bike then sits on it's wheels so it's not hanging from it's crossbar , so it doesn't matter what material the bike is made of . Just type in " tow bar mounted bike rack " on ebay to see different versions on the same theme .
Ps , proper bikes should be made of reynolds 531 tubing any way
pps did my 50 mile cancer research ride yesterday , a little sore this morning , but we're on holiday , and off out mountain biking today !

My 87 Coventry Eagle on the top of one of the climes :D

nice work stina! 50 miles - impressive stuff. My bike is aluminium with carbon bits. My raleigh equipe racer from when i was about 12 was reynolds tubing.... disappeared when i was around 18 though.

That's the sort of thing Rich , keep looking and they're about for less than 100 quid . The bike is sat on it's wheels , as nature intended :D
