Choke cable

I am having to get used to using a choke again, after many years, mine is difficult to lock in position. The knob turns, but not the shaft, which means that it just springs back in. It is sometimes possible to grasp the shaft & turn it sufficiently to hold, but not always. Even with the old clothes peg in place, it does not hold the choke far enough out to pull away, leading me to try holding it out, whilst balancing throttle & clutch & watching out for gaps in traffic. Would it be feasible to pull out the inner choke cable & replace it with a new one, without disturbing the outer cable, which sounds a bit of a faffy job. It would be good to dispose of the clothes peg, not an elegant solution for a Rover!

I replaced the whole cable - was a good second hand one from wins from memory....

dont think you could really just replace the inner?

Wouldn't it just slide out, or is that too easy! Failing that, I wondered if I could somehow re-affix the knob to the shaft, possibly with some hard core glue? It hasn't come off altogether, just turns without turning the shaft.

I seem to remember that theres no easy place to join the cable to the handle ( certainly on the series one style choke pull!). I dont know if the series 2 one is any easier?

no - i'm being thick ( still cloudy from general anaesthetic i think!). you're right i left the outter in situe...

Ah, so my cunning plan might be possible then. Did you manage to get the inner cable out smoothly & more to the point , get the new one in fairly easily. Hope you're feeling ok, just been for an MOT?

had a very deep wisdom tooth out under general anaesthetic on thursday. playing havoc with me still.

Yes i think your method is good - although its entirely possible i'm making that up too... ;)

Thanks for your advice, especially in your weakened condition, (hope you are milking it to the max with the missus!) I'll give it a go when I get hold of a replacement, although I may try to fix the existing one first. Will report back with the results.

Hi Ron,
I have to replace my Choke cable, and I was trying to review the previous thread you mentioned above.
Unfortunately it can't be opened. Any Suggestion how and where this piece can be accessed?

Thanks.

Thomas

Thanks for this information. It was quite helpful.
The cable is out now but only to find out that my usual supplier (JRW) is out of stock at the moment. I need the single cable version for HIF6 carbs. Has anybody got an alternative source for one?

Thanks
Thomas

Well, the looks are okay but the question is whether or not the cable is long enough or not. The original one measures approx. 125 cm on the outer cable plus 10 cm on the inner.
