Chrome Wipers

Ron still has his original wipers....... I've just put new rubbers in them last week from a set of pounshop full blades

So what do you need to know?

I was told last week that the original chrome wiper had a split in it. ie looking at the wiper in situ, do you have a solid flat chrome "blade"

To be clear, I think the type you are referring to are the later type. At the earliest, I think they arrived with the 3500S manual in around '72. Certainly they were pretty well standard by the end of production. They have the upper structure formed from two stainless steel rods, set around 3 to 4 mm apart. The Triumph stag used similar. They are not widely available today. I have seen sets at £60 a pair at an autojumble and one of the Triumph Stag specialists sells them - but that is all I've found. I believe the idea is that they are not as subject to lifting off the screen at speed.

That'll be a definite no from me on those....... I have the standard, solid stainless items, of differing sizes left and right, which works remarkably well!

This brings up a problem I have been thinking about. I have multiple sets of the "anti lift" wiper arms , but can't find replacement rubbers like we used "back then". I think what's available today just doesn't look right on a '68 car.

Anti-lift wipers sounds a good idea. Mine has the common trico items, with replacement rubber blades. At moderate speeds they wipe reasonably well, but above 70 - 75 mph they struggle to move across the windscreen, such is the resistance they create. Also above 90 - 100 mph, the parked blades start to move from their position a lot higher in the windscreen. Of course i don't have the chance to experience this often, but it is another characteristic of the P6, along with the auto - folding door mirrors at those speeds.

I often reach high speeds ^^^ + and have not experianced the wipers lifting or my mirrors moving :?: must have them just right :?: or my speedo may be out by 50mph :? although I'm passing everything in sight...

My wipers are original 2 piece Trico, and have no problems with high speed lift, but I rarely use them at speed in the rain as I RainX my screen, and find the screen clears faster in moderate rain at speeds over 50 without the wipers.

Hi Guy, i probably didn't explain it very well, but the problem at high speeds (> 70 anyway) is not wipper lift. They just seem to struggle to move at certain points in their route across the screen, and being pushed violently at others. Of course the wear in the link system exaggerates this while perhaps you have a later cable driven system that is more tight. The same goes with the blades moving at speed. They are pushed by the wind to take all the available slack and perhaps a little more! As for the mirrors i guess that it is something affecting this particular type of Desmo mirrors.

I see what your saying Demetris, those mirrors do look a lot larger than the wingards so probably less aerodynamic causing more drag..
