Classic car insurance

I guess this may well have been covered many times, but I cannot find any threads about it, not even sure if this is the right section for it. Can anyone recommend insurers for this? it's been a while since I needed it, so would rather go on recommendation. TIA.

Theres a few you could try, Lancaster, Footman James, Adrian Flux to name but a few, these advertise in the classic car mags eg Practical Classics and can be googled for an on line quote. Good luck.

I've got my 2000 with Peter Best, who were one of the few companies who listened to me, as a younger driver. Their prices seemed very competitive indeed, and they seem to be a good company to deal with. I wouldn't give Footman James any business, given the way that they completely changed who they'd insure overnight, with regard to young people.
I'd also suggest that you try lots of classic brokers, as they can often get some great deals. I've heard both Peter S Taylor, and Peter James, spoken of highly, in the past.

I've always insured my P6 with Lancaster. Don't know if they are the cheapest but they are always pleasant to deal with on the phone.

I've never made a claim though and always reckon the real test of a good insurer is how easily/quickly they cough up if you have a legitimate claim rather than necessarily being the cheapest? There are a few forum members who, in recent months, unfortunately had to make insurance claims and I wonder if any positive feedback regarding their experiences with insurers could be shared?

(Reading Willy's post, I should add that I did use the breakdown service once (Green Flag) that I have with my Lancaster policy and was very impressed with the service).

I've been with RH for the last couple of years and am happy with everything they do. There's breakdown cover included which I had to use the other evening after the BMW E28 flattened its battery - one phone call, reg number requested (no hunting for paperwork) and 25mins later a bloke arrived with a starter pack. That's what I call good service!

Ive been with Footman James for the last 15 odd years, and never had a quote for a multicar policy that offers what I want by anyone else to better it!!
Thats for the 1971 P6V8,1970 TR6,and 1954 MGTF1500.
Its due for renewal in June,so will see what price/deal they offer me.
The things it offers are my cars dont have to be garaged, mileage is unlimited,EU breakdown,£15k max agreed value for each car without a club valuation.
Although,as they are only the broker, they look at the underwriters who offer the best deal, and currently my policy is with Royal & Sun Alliance.
They always write with a reminder and price before the policy ends, and I have the option of saying yes,no,or having a haggle, and you know me and haggling!!!
Saying that,price isnt always everything!!
I had a claim against me in 1980,and have never made a claim before!
1 person hit me in my Dolomite Sprint, and we settled beween us.
I am currently claiming for damage caused by something like acid or brake fluid on the middle of the bonnet on the TR6,which ran down to the edge and has ruined it!!
So far the claims process has been ok!!
Ive got a repair estimate, rang the claims line, and am waiting on the assesor to ring to make an appointment to see it,and discuss the claim.
We will see what transpires!!!

Thanks for all the replies guys, will compile a list & give a few of them a ring, to see which one sounds the best for myself.

I recently renewed with Lancaster via a phone call, after I had casually delayed doing so until I realised I was 24 hours overdue and uninsured :(
As a result the policy had effectively expired but the agent took me through the whole procedure, reading the relevant clauses to me (as the legal situation requires), cross checking and finally confirming I was covered again. Took the best part of 30 minutes but it was done properly, and as I had in fact used the car that morning - unintentionally uninsured  - I just sat there and agreed to everything.
When the paperwork subsequently arrived I bunged it on to my"filing" pile and it was a couple of weeks before I checked it closely. I found that the agent had included Lost Key Cover at a cost of £18:50.
Now I've never lost my car keys in 45+ years, mislaid them yes (hundreds of times!) but not permanent loss, so as I was within the 30 day cancellation option I rang them and pulled out of just the Lost Key cover. Once again they were polite and competent and paid the money to my card account forthwith.
As you can tell I appreciate Lancaster and will be with them for a while!
Probably lose my keys now I've bragged online!

I was with Aon, for over 15yrs, then the classic car section was taken over By Footman James. My policy went up 50% and then the haggling started over agreed values, 2 cars, 2 seperate garaging locations, etc, etc. I got bored, went with Peter James, who was the James in Footman James. Excellent to deal with, cheaper, and they understand classic cars.

A very fast service from Footman James, actually,I dealt direct with the Royal & Sun Alliance claims line.
Rang through the claim on monday, assesor came this morning, cash settlement agreed,he rang it through to authorise, chqs in the post.
Now we will see what happens to the quote cost at renewal time in June!

Dont know if it was done deliberate while I was staying overnight at freinds,or something thrown up by a passing car, that may have had brake fluid leaking onto a tyre!
Fortunately its only cosmetic, and Dean, who originally painted it in 07,will do the work.
He has also done the Rover and the MGTF.

Just got an online quote from Peter Best, £330 odd quid, mmm I don't think I will be taking them up on that one! Waiting for quotes from Peter James & about to phone Lancaster & Sureterm. Will let you know the outcome.

Well, I think that Peter James have clinched it with a quote of £87.50, that even includes the missus driving! not sure if I'm feeling brave enough for that though!

Got the settlement chq this morning! :D
Cant get much quicker than that!!
Incident reported on mon, assesor came weds, chq arrived fri! :)

Just had my renewal quote through from FJ - £228. Not too bad when you consider that this covers the Lady C which I use daily and put around 16k miles on last year (around a third of that was business miles) and it also covers my 3500S on a laid-up basis. However, my policy is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA) and I'm not entirely happy with the way they handled my claim last year. I don't think they fought hard enough with the other party's insurance company (Aviva) to recover my uninsured losses and as a result I'm about £75 down for something that was entirely the other party's fault.

So I'm shopping around. Not a great deal of success at the moment either

I started with those companies given pride of place in Driving Force, The magazine of the Rover P6 Club. Adrian Flux quoted me £319 for the Lady C alone plus an additional £67 for my 3500S laid-up - strike one then. RH said I needed to have the use of a "modern" car as my daily driver - strike 2. Peter Best would not insure me for business use, Carole Nash said the same and that my private mileage was too high and Lancaster said much the same strikes 3, 4 and 5.

I'll try a few more later this week but it's looking more and more like I'm stuck with FJ. The other thing I've picked up on is that "classic" policies do not qualify for no claims discount (NCD). I've been driving on a classic policy for the last 4 and a half years so have effectively not been getting any NCD for those years. Not a problem as long as I stay on a "classic" policy, but it might be a problem if I subsequently change to a "standard" policy for a "modern" car or attempt to insure the Lady C on a "standard" policy to cover the mileage and business use aspects. I just wonder how long it will be before FJ, or rather RSA decide that they will no longer provide this level of cover?

It's not just young drivers who struggle to find insurance for their P6s  and I think the joint clubs need to look at investigating the declining availability of insurance for those of us who use our "classic" cars every day.

Dave

I use my cars every day Dave. Only difference is mine are to and from work so not business use. I am with Sureterm Direct, you could try them buti think its business use they don't like
