clonking noise from rear

First posting for me, so I don't know if I have the right section.

I acquired a tatty old 2200TC (1974) to use as a run around. However, there were a number things wrong with it before it could be used. These have been sorted, except one thing. Whenever you pull away from a standing start and sometimes when you change gear there is a noise from the rear that sounds like the spare tyre or a bowling ball is rolling around inside the boot. Once the car is moving at speed the noise isn't a problem.

I haven't had the the time to jack up the car and look at the rear (it is also parked on a street) but I am guessing it maybe worn UJ's.

Any other ideas or theories.

Thanks

Never had the boot of a P6 down as being big enough for a bowling alley....

But seriously; a few items to check:

Check that the diff is bolted up solid, particularely the nose mounting ie nearest the engine. A known problem.

Doesn't sound like UJ's; they are insulated from the shell so wouldn't make such a loud din. Note that they can appear ok to the external poking and prodding, but once apart are clearly u/s - of course your committed to changing them by then!

Next port of call for me would be suspension rubber bushes.

From the description I'd have a particularely carefull look at the ones front and rear in the bar that runs backwards from the de dion elbows and attachs to the car on the sides of the boot well. While your at it here, look at the attachment points for these bars on the de dion elbows. Another known failure point is the lug on the de dion elbow tearing away from the elbow.

Next up would be the ones in the torque reaction bar which runs from the back of the diff across the car to the front of the boot well.

Then of course there are the bushes supporting the diff itself.

Depending how much agro your up for I should think you would be about set to renew all the rear bushes with polybushes by this stage! www.superflex.co.uk

Happy hunting

I have to agree with Chris on the diff mounts, and if it is them do it quick before it gets worse, I ignored mine for a bit to long and ended up having to rebuild the cross member the front dif mount bolts to.
Also check the gear box snub rubber as if this has warn it will alow the prop to move about and hit the underside abit, this can sound like its coming fom the back as it can hit the exhaust,
As for cv joints on the prop most motor factors can get these quite cheaply asthey are used on a number of diffurent classics, hope you find out what the problem is and enjoy the car :blues:
