Commission/Chassis Numbers

Is it possible to obtain a chassis number from the body number I have for my car. The problem is that the only chassis number I can find is a home made plate screwed onto the n/s inner wing; a very amateurish job. I've read they are supposed to be stamped onto both front inner wings and also onto the rear decker panel (I assume this is on the body, not on the removable top panel? - and do I need to remove the top panel to see it?) but I can't see any evidence of them - I'm hoping they are just covered in paint but I don't want to strip it off unless I have to.

The number on the plate on the left hand side of the boot slam panel is BA 067428. As far as I can tell that looks original. I'm sure it's ok but I just would like to confirm the chassis number agrees with what my V5 says.

Thanks - I have the base unit number posted above. What I would like is the actual chassis number from that if it's possible to obtain - maybe someone who has access to Rover build records.

Could someone also show me exactly where the number is on the decker panel? I'm not sure I understand exactly where it is on there. Is it visible without dismantling anything?

Hi, some early cars did have, as you have, what appears to be a home made stamped plate
screwed to the inner wing. later cars had the chassis number stamped into both front inner
wings and under the rear decker panel. If the number on the plate and your V5 are the same
then that is all the DVLA are concerned about, they are not interested in what base unit was
used. Or do you want this for your own peace of mind or records?

Hi Colin, this is not an early car - base unit number BA 067428. The plate screwed onto the inner wing is a very crude home made job (emphasis on CRUDE, complete with a mistake that was corrected!) and I can find no evidence of numbers stamped on the body in the usual places. As I said above they are probably covered in paint but I don't want to start scraping that back at this point. The base unit plate on the boot slam panel looks original and unmolested, so what I'm looking for to confirm is whether that base unit number marries up with my chassis number on the V5.

It's not always that simple.

You would have had a small tacked plate on the inner wing, and a rectangular plate on the opposite side near the radiator/spec sticker.

Sounds like someone has scraped the tacked plate off, and the other ones are known to fall off as they're usually only attached with sealant.

The best you can probably hope for is to show some pictures, and get some opinions as to whether it looks to be correct, and then buy a new (proper) plate for the car.
