Common Parts, Jaguar to Rover

One for Harvey here I think. Thanks to a query from WarrenL and a response from KeaneJ we've discovered the web site for SNG Barret Jaguar Spares. This has already yielded a remanufactured otter switch, so, knowing that the P6B has the same front brake calipers as the early E Type I went for a browse in brakes. First discovery was this: http://www.sngbarratt.com/catalogue/parts/show.asp?id=11932 Unless I'm going daft as well as blind my reading is that these are bolt on conversions for the P6B as well? The other alloy caliper and vented conversions listed below this one look interesting as well. Then I had a look at rear brakes: http://www.sngbarratt.com/catalogue/parts/search.asp and there are listings for items that sound suspiciously like P6 rear brake caliper parts. Do E Type S1's have the same rear calipers as the P6? Or, if not could you swap them?

Some 25 years ago I purchased a set of both front and rear caliper flexible hoses and front caliper pistons, all were packaged in Jaguar boxes. The hoses I purchased locally from the then Jaguar Rover Australian distributor which was known as JRA. The pistons I purchased locally from a Triumph Rover spare parts specialist. I have a feeling that the V8 front brake pads are also common to Jaguars,..series 1 or series 2 XJ6.. :?

Don't they also have a single bleed nipple on the rear too, but with an extension tube which makes access to it a lot easier than on the P6. It's been discussed on here before IIRC.

The E types have the same as the Dunlop brakes on early P6's at least on the front. I just bought 2 new pistons for my 2000. I know that they use the same brake pads and hand brake pads on the rear. Also I recall reading somewhere that the Jaguar otto switch opens rather than closes when the motor is warm.

Is an otter switch???

Hello Junkman,

An otter switch is made by Otter Controls...http://www.ottercontrols.com/company_profile.php

There is one fitted on the V8 inlet manifold. It is used to illuminate an orange light on the dash when a certain temperature is reached thus warning the driver that their choke is still out. It does not signify that the choke should remain in operation until the light illuminates, rather it is just a reminder.

That link is fascinating. Apparently they came into being specifically to serve Rover! And now to be found in your kettles and washing machines everywhere! The Rover connection wasn't the P6 though - they quote 1946 and via flying suits, so I wonder if the jet engine programme was the link?

Thanks for that, that's rather interesting. I was wondering how that light knows that the engine is warm.
