Compatible Front Calipers

I'm just starting to re-commissioning my 3500 auto after 10 years of hibernation. As you can guess the brakes need attention.

I've heard that range rover calipers can be substituted for the 3 pot rover items. Can anyone confirm this? Obviously these are much cheaper.

Hi,

I've not heard that before.

Checking through part numbers at >Brakes International< the part numbers for the fronts are not the same when comparing the P6B and the 70-81Classic Range Rover (UNF threads).

I'd be a bit wary of fitting any caliper that wasn't listed for the P6B.

Welcome to the forum by the way! :)

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking that if the mounting holes are on the same pitch and the caliper doesn't foul the disc they should be OK. Pads are only 8 quid and brand new calipers are only £60 quid non exchange. If they can stop a range rover then they'll have no problems stopping a P6.

I was just wondering if anybody has tried.

Range Rover and Discovery have the same as SD1 calipers maybe that is what you have heard??

The P6 has very good brakes and the front pads are cheap. If you find them lacking in stopping power then I would strip them down and fit new seals and pistons.

Am currently rebuilding the old calipers with new seals etc. Pistons are a little bit pitted but should be OK.
Always good to have another option though.

Got lots to do on the ole' motor and it's been a while since I tinkered with it. Already fitted a new master cylinder, got new flexi hoses to fit, made new rigid pipes and then it will be the rears!!!!!! Not looking forward to that.

Unlike the master cylinder and the rear calipers where the condition of the bore is crucial in ensuring that there are no fluid leaks, the front calipers rely on the pistons. This is why these calipers do not need resleeving, as contact between the seals and the pistons provides the fluid seal. If the pitting is in an area of the piston where the seals will make contact, then you have a problem and new or refurbished pistons will need to be fitted.
