Crankshaft Pulley..timing marks.

I have read a number of articles both on and off the web which advise to check the accuracy of the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, with number one piston at TDC and ensure that the markings correlate.

When my Rover had the original 3.5 litre 10.5 : 1 CR engine, the ignition timing was set to TDC as per spec, but the engine would still ping on occassions.

Has anyone set up a dial gauge on number one when the heads were off and verified for themselves that the timing marks are in fact correct on their engine?

Ron.

Hi Ron,

The timing marks can indeed be out by a few degrees. My heads will be coming off in the next couple of weeks to be replaced with a pair of '93 3.9's and a job on the list is to check the TDC pointer accuracy.
