Dangers of home-brewed bio-diesel?

Spawning from both the recent thread about a 72 P6 2000 being fitted with a Peugeot 1.9TD engine, and my thread from some months ago about seeing a P6B in a YouTube video behind a bio-diesel "still".

How safe is it to brew your own bio-diesel? According to the Goat Industries (http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/healthandsafety.html), and the Health & Safety Executive (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/biodiesel.htm), not very!

I have to say, one point given by Goat Industries, namely, "Biodiesel should only be made by mature, coherent, sensible and able 'competent people', not children, the elderly, the physically or mentally impaired (apologies where due), or those prone to accidents." seems quite patronising IMHO!

i guess it depends on whether the car in question needs bio diesel or is ok on veg oil with a little white spirits... think it depends on having heated fuel lines from memory...

As a Moderator on the Goat Industries Forum can I say Paddy's (The Owner) advice is correct.

Making Biodiesel is dangerous..
...as is driving an old car in modern traffic.

Both can be done safely by reading up on it and getting involved with others
who know what they are doing and how to do it safely.

Nice to see the old one about veg oil + white spirt raising its head
...fast way of getting caught that is, the use of white spirt as a road fuel attracts duty.

Should anyone REALLY want to know how to make Biodiesel correctly and more importantly safely,
or the use of Vegetable oil in cars, then I recommend they read around the Goat Industries Forum.

Didn't that forum get threatened with legal action at one time? Some company 'asked' for some thread/rant to be removed?

BTW, if I may ask you to elaborate, in what way do you mean driving an old car in modern traffic is dangerous?

True but when offered Court Action the company declined....

...the other stuff about old cars was meant to be ironic,
danger is where you find it and usually the result of not knowing enough about something.

Heh heh!

They lost their 'puff', so to speak!

True, lots do get into dangerous situations by not knowing! That's why I search this forum for tips and ideas when I do finally bag myself a 3500S.
