Date of manufacture?

Hi All,

I have a P6 that was first registered in 1973 and a friend tells me that it might be worth checking the date of manufacture, as the tax exempt status is for cars manufactured before 1st Jan 1973, and not first registered before that date. Does anybody know how I can check the date of manufacture of my car?

Thanks,
Dayle

You'll need to get a Heritage Certificate from BMIHT, and then present that to the DVLA.

As long as the build date is before 1/1/73, then you should be fine.

Ah, yes. Thanks Chris. They have a link to check just that but it costs a fiver. Just before I check that I was wondering if the P6 Rover Owners Club might have details of my car. There is a P6 Rover Owners Club sticker in the car so a previous owner may have had it registered with the club. Does anyone know if they would they retain such details?

If it was 1st registered within the 1st 2 months of 1973 ie Jan/Feb,and on an L reg, then its very likely its tax exempt.
Anything with an M reg ie; registered after Aug 1973 is more than likely a 1973 build.
I have been told that normally the DVLA will accept that as qualification for tax exempt status.
However, very early 2200's will not be tax exempt,as apparently none were made in 1972!
The only way to find out for sure is via the heritage build details trace from the BMIHT.

It is an L reg Rover 2000 SC so I have filled in the web form and paid my fiver. Hopefully they will get back to me quickly with some good news. :D

As a Club we have the final car in 1972 and first car in 1973 numbers to hand.

Another quick reference point is the choke and fuel reserve pulls. If the car has the later round 'crushable' type it's very likely not to be a 1972 car, these parts changed in January 1973, certainly by about the 20th January.

I suspect it's quite unlikely now that cars will turn out to be tax free that weren't thought to be before.

Cheers
Nick

I had thought it would be unlikely not to have been checked before now. The only thing that's got me really wondering is when it went to have it's MOT the VIN was put into the computer and it came up as a 1972 on there. The last owner had it for 19 years, so if he didn't check then perhaps it hasn't been. Well, I'll find out for sure soon enough.

Thanks,
Dayle
