Daytime Running Lights

I had the misfortune to be in front of a Porsche Cayenne the other day with Xenon lights and of course these are somewhat higher than a regular car. I've been blinded by lights in the mirror before but this was the first time the glare from the white headlining in my VW was bright enough to blind me!
I've had similar experiences. I've often thought that whoever invented those lights should be put in a dark room and have their invention continually flashed into their eyes - see how they like it!

I was stationary on M4 recently for 20 mins.
The guy in front had his foot on the brake the whole time - really bright high level LEDs - seemed surprised when my horn kept going off !

Mark.

This thread is ace. Modern cars are way too complicated and obviously designed to empty your wallet the very instant the warranty expires.

And why can't we see out of cars anymore? The view all round in my P6 is excellent. Why are most moderns like post boxes?

Well, to be honest, moderns have their merits too, aside of their undisputable cost either as new (depreciation) or used (repairs).
I realised that having to add a 300 - 400 mile trip on top of 8-10 hours work within a day, once or twice a week, come rain or shine was wearing out both me and my Rover, and was emptying my wallet from fuel bills.
There is no doubt that our classics are the most enjoyable to own and use, but there is no comparison to the ability of a good modern to cruise at high speeds in complete silence consuming negligible amounts of fuel. But if you don't have such needs, good for you!

Because moderns are designed to survive pianos dropped on their roofs, something you wouldn't really like to happen to your P6 with you in.(or out for that matter!)

Ah yes, that Avensis had a dreadful electronic handbrake too. I expect they may explain one of my bugbears - people using their footbrakes while sitting in a traffic jam, dazzling the following driver with their high level brake lights. I'd assumed it was just laziness, but bad design can't be helping.

Addressing Rockdemon's point re cycling I have small but intense flashing lamps front & rear, + one on my bike helmet. I may irritate you but that's better than you inadvertently trying to occupy the bit of road I'm already using!
Do you also have non-flashing lights on at the same time? I ask because flashing lights on their own make it very hard for drivers to judge your position. Our depth perception doesn't work properly when there's only a series of flashes so you can appear further away than you actually are.

Speaking of electronic handbrakes I got a call from my mother in law last year about her Skoda Octavia DSG. She had just traded a E320 auto against it and call to say it had run backwards on a hill in traffic. The sales man had never warned her not to drive it like a traditional auto. I drove it up a hill, braked to a stop, and sure enough when I hit the throttle again immediately it ran back about 2 metres! As it does not have a torque converter you have to come to a complete stop, hold the brake for at least 2 seconds, and then it holds for a further 2 seconds after brake release to get back on the throttle. Ok once you get used to it but not good if you're not warned!! Although it does still have a normal handbrake!
Regards,
Dave

Its all on the road to driverless cars where the human is at the mercy of a bloody computer driven vehicle. I for one will be using our 1999 Landrover for many years to come and our rover P6 2200TC. I'd rather use a horse and cart than get in a car that drives itself !!!

A 75 won't empty your wallet, not until they're valued more than they are. And as for comfort on a long journey, well, it does turn your head a little I must say, especially with the climate control. Not to say the old girls aren't beautifully appointed, I think it's more to do with the improvements in general ride noise, mechanically & aerodynamically.

The front pillars are quite substantial but as Demitris says, you gotta be wary of those airbourne Steinways. :D

My daily has got quite a few gismos on it, and I must admit it is quite infuriating when I drive the P6.

1/. If it starts to rain when in the P6 I have to reach over and manually turn the wipers on!!
2/. If visibility reduces I have to not only turn the lights on, BY HAND!! but have to decide what setting to turn them on to!
3/. I have to let the handbrake off when driving the Rover, what is that all about?
4/. I can pull away in the Rover, without my seatbelt on - now that is just dangerous.
5/. I can start the Rover with it in gear, just by holding the clutch in
6/. I have to go around the whole car and lock all of the doors individually, including the boot and filler cap.

Only kidding, I still prefer cruising around in Sparky :)

The one thing I do like about the modern, is the non roll away setting on the handbrake. When you come to a complete halt, it will not move until you press the throttle. There is therefore no need to blind people behind you, just sit there with the feature holding the car stationary.

What this really means is that with the P6 you must have your brain engaged, an optional extra for the driver of a modern.

Yes indeed, the modern car is making people into worse drivers and are taking away the need for driving skills. You don't even need to be able to parallel park these days, just sit there in your basic Ford, press a button and fold your arms until it finishes.

yikes. A scarier question, if you're in your automatic car and going along, and a group of children jump into the road, will it be programmed to go around them and save the lot? You'd assume so, but what if there's an HGV coming the other way? Will it fire you into the HGV because that's less people? Hopefully they'll be good enough to read the road ans surroundings well enough to stop that happening, but then you'll get rear ended as the computer decides it's too dangerous to drive past a bus stop at 30mph and tanks the brakes on...

Next question - When the robotic car crashes or kills someone who is to blame?
I can see the first accident investigator going into the browser history and checking to see if the latest Service Pack has been applied, alon with the recommended anti-virus measures.....

Dave, how does the transmission work to get around the stopped with the engine running scenario that a T/C would normally do, then?
The DSG box is essentially 2 manual gearboxes with 2 electronically controlled clutches. These are 4 plate wet clutches to the best of my knowledge. 1 clutch operates the odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse) and the other operates the even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th). When the car comes to a standstill both clutches are disengaged, hence the roll back potential. Strangely, despite the lack of a T/C it's surprisingly controllable at low speeds and acceleration from standstill is very impressive (especially for a 1.6 TDi).

Regards,
Dave
