De-dion elbow

Guys

I've just had one of those "bloody hell I'm glad I looked" moments

I was having a look under the back of the car for anything obvious that might be leading to the vibration the car has recently developed and I happened to look across at the driver's side De-Dion elbow. This is what I saw

That's just waiting for the the chance to break off and collapse. The other side looks solid enough

So I'm looking for a good driver's side De-Dion elbow if anyone has one.

cheers

Dave

That just goes to show the benefits of having a wander around under there on a regular basis. (Although not quite regularly enough for it to have got that bad....)

EEk! But I'd sugest that is more likely to be a consequence of your vibration than a cause.

Yes EEK indeed. The vibration will have undoubtedly made it worse.

With the amount of work I've just done at the back end, albeit at the other side, I'm surprised I didn't spot this sooner.......AND the car had an MOT only 3 weeks ago!

There are a few people breaking rear ends on ebay so hopefully I'll be able to get it sorted soon.

Just waiting to go.

Beware of 2nd hand ones as the metal goes thin and if the half shafts are fitted impossible to see where they rust through.

Get on the phone to MR W, I got a good used one a few years back.

Mine went as I pulled away from traffic lights but 10mins before I was doing atleast 70mph down the M8

What I did was got a couple of plates gas welded to them for a bit of strength and then Galvanised. The photos are on my orangephotobox but the links die, click on my webpage link under my avtar.

I'll give Ian a call tomorrow and see if he has a pair just in case the other one has gone thin where I can't see.

That'll be the car off the road again

I dont think the bolts etc around there were particularly bad to get off on PAE so should be quickish for you to do once you have the bits with a bit of luck!

Rich.

If he hasn't got some one of the guys were telling me where one is last night at the meeting. I will ask for some details. Think it might have been Bridge of Allan.

That's what I'd call a good save :D
As our treasures get older we have to keep a look out for age related issues

Thanks Colin

Ian thinks he has one but will get back to me today to confirm.

Well worth dropping the bottom link out of the other one and having a good look. They tend to rot from the inside.

Hi Roly

Thanks, yes I was planning on doing just that. I'll be changing the drive shaft UJs as well as the diff mounts to see if it cures the annoying vibration the car has developed so the back end mechanicals will all get a good looking over.

Dave

That's scary Dave!

If Ian can't oblige, it'd be worth trying Nick Dunning. He helped me out with a really good pair last year - originally to replace those on Rebekah although I may put them on Occie.

Good luck mate.
