DeDion oil seals, how to replace....

Just popped the centre part of my DeDion to replace the split gaiter. As it was leaking a lot of oil so I got an oil seal. And that was my first error, there are two! Would have been nice if the place I ordered it from had a comment that two were needed. So I'll have to wait a couple of days for a second to come in the post. But will give me time to paint it all up. But the second problem is how to change the oil seal at the end where the gaiter is. Seems to be held in place by an odd metal sleeve. See pic. any ideas how to get it out???

Hello Richard,

The DeDion tube in my Rover is of the grease type, but it also has the same type of yellow oil seal as illustrated in your post.

I have not replaced it when servicing the tube, but at a guess I would think that the sleeve that retains the seal is a press on retainer. It may well be possible to gently tap it off with a suitable drift. :?

I replaced the oil seal ok. The reason I asked was that I was worried about damaging that metal sleave that is also the flange, looked like something that could get bent and be hard to replace / fix. But using a small flat nosed screw driver and being gentle I got the old one out which had gone hard and brittle.

Here is the pipe ready and waiting to go back on, just waiting for the second oil seal to come in the post. :)
