Dipped beam failure - In thge dark

My current problem is that dipped beam doesnt work - full beam does. This came on gradually - To start with the dipped would last ages and then stop!

For its MOT recently - lasted long enough to get through! 10 mins - Now doesnt work at all!

I have replaced the column switch - No change - Tommorrow I will replace the "dashboard" switch.

The fuses are fine. What else can I try?

(No problem with full beam)

Hi Fenton,

Have you tried wiggling the fuses with the headlights switched on? I had a similar problem on a Mk1 Escort once, and it turned out to be a dodgy connection in the fuse box. Moving the fuse about in the holder resulted in flickering headlamps!

Best Wishes.

Hi Richard - It was indeed the fuse box! Slight traces of melting - wiggling the wires was a temporary fix!

Is fitting a new fuse box relatively easy? - Thinking of replacing with a "blade type one (as the original needs replacing anyway).

Not being the most knowledgable auto-electrician - I guess I could "swap over" the wires fuse by fuse?

Hi Fenton,

I've never really played with the fuse box on a P6 before, luckily mine have always been reliable. I did have to do some substantial rewiring on mine a while back though, thanks to someone plugging the live feed for the fog lights straight to earth! It wasn't really a bad job, just time consuming, but my car had burnt all the wiring right across the dash!

I dare say that there are some people on this forum that have had fuse boxes out on P6's before. I would suggest contacting ianp6man.

Best Wishes,
Richard
