Disintegrating Pyrex Mug

Anyone experienced a pyrex mug seemingly disintegrating "out of the blue"?

I was carrying a mug of tea, the mug seemed to explode in my hand. Luckily (but strangely too) the tea was not very hot, and I had drank about half of it.

I was very shocked; I expected that if the mug would go, it would have gone while I was pouring boiling water from the kettle.
Mind you, had that tea been hot, I would have likely been scalded!

Anybody else had any similar experiences with pyrex mugs or glassware? Apparently it's not that uncommon, according to google and snopes. One even mentioned it happened to them during cleaning in hand-hot water

The company I work for, recently,"this year",supplied office mugs via its office supplies catalogue to many places only to be told by the manufacturers about a potential problem like this, and they then instigated a major recall of all mugs sold.
IIRC they were branded MARS,SNICKERS!or such like!
Wouldnt be surprised if some escaped the recall though!!

someone i know had a similar problem with the glass oven door , it just exploded one day!is it the same kind of material?rich

Hi, after a bit of research true Pyrex glass is made from borosilicate glass which is
resistant to thermal shock. However a lot of glassware is called Pyrex (a tradename)
but is actually made from tempered soda-lime glass which can and will shatter.

A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did the Pyrex Mug.

My excuse for this, is that my telly isn't working and I'm bored 8)

Thanks guys! I think what made it worse was it seemingly shattered into small shards, very difficult to see and the obvious danger! :-S

Oh, well done and thanks to quattro for reminding me that it may have been the dark side of the force that consumed the pyrex mug! I keep forgetting at times I am a practising sith and in tune with the dark side! :p

We have (or should be had) a couple of glass shopping block type things in the kitchen, had them for a few years and they've been very tough, no problems chopping, putting hot plates etc on them.

A few weeks ago however the wife put a very hot casserole dish from the oven onto one of them and it exploded big style, we are still finding pieces of glass in odd places throughout the kitchen, some shards have flown at least 10 feet, luckily I was out of the house, but she tells me it was very scary

My mum got home one day to find a glass chopping board in a thousand pieces all over the kitchen floor, think I'll stick to wood

Yes we now have 2 new wooden boards, they're much better anyway, don't blunt the knives like the glass ones.
