Dismantle Front Seats

I'm in the middle of dismantling my front seats to sort out the leather (another topic!) and as usual for me, I'm struggling to get over the first hurdle and need the expertise of the forum.

I have the seat out and on the bench and I'm (trying to) follow the Workshop Manual.

I am following the instructions that say:
"Remove the screw securing the torsion bar retainer and drift the torsion bar out about 1 in. towards the lever to release spring tension. Then withdraw the bar."

The first bit is straight forward with a metal dowel and a hammer but the bar wont withdraw from the bearing on the other side. The bar comes nearly all the way out before stopping. Here's a piccy so that you can see what I'm seeing...........

I've tried putting mole grips on the bar and the hitting the mole grips with a hammer, but it doesn't want to budge. I'm wondering if my workshop manual (dated August 1967) is referring to an older seat - I have a 1971 Series 2 - but with Series 1 seats - She's a Series 1½.

The next steps in the book are:
"Remove the two remaining screws securing the adjuster plate and remove, then lever the plate out." DONE THAT

"Remove the spring ring from the loose bearing on the squab frame; remove bearing. This operation must be carried out to prevent spreading of squab frame when dismantling." ASSUME THAT'S THE BEARING I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH?

Thanks for your help.

Brian.

I've answered my own question now.

It seems that the torsion bar had a slight burr on the end that must have been there since 1971, I filed the end and then gave it a big tug and it came out.

I thought it had to be simple.

Thanks anyway

Brian
