Door Mirrors

I have recently joined the world of P6 Rovers having purchased a 1973 model a fortnight ago. I still retain my P4 100 model 1959 vintage and a Jag xjs 5.3 litre 1986.
My new car has no external mirrors and I would like to fit a matching pair of door mirrors but I am unsure of the correct style for the period and car involved. Can anyone advise me on what is suitable from the currently available items. I have seen 2000s fitted with what I believe are "Tex" rectangular ones made from the original tooling. Are these acceptable?

Door mirrors seem to be one of those areas that vary from car to car. My 1974 3500 (4600) has one type of mirror and yet every other P6 or P6B that I take a close look at...you guessed it...has a different type.. I have never seen another P6 locally that has a mirror like mine, and yet the the original Leyland Dealer who sold the car from new no doubt fitted it I assume.

Some cars had no mirrors fitted,...mine has one on the driver's door and yet others have one on the passenger's front door too,...and lets not forget wing mirrors that adorn some cars.

If you check in the optional equipment section of the parts catalogue you could also fit 'bullet' style similar to

which are a lot more stylish and sporty than the boring old rectangular ones

I like this style of mirror :)

I can remember my dad having a pair of these on the wings of his '65 Mk1 Cortina estate.

My car has a winguard square type with black surround on the passenger side and a completely different one on the driver's side :?

I'll get around to fitting a matching pair eventually.

I have been looking at this recently and have compiled an e-mail which shows photographs of several P6's with different door mirrors - oblong, round and racing ones. I favour the .........wait for it.......round ones......and the long based tex ones are I believe more stable and easy to fit as they screw on from the outside. I will try and forward you the e-mail if this forum allows. But having said all that most people have oblong ones. Your choice. Look at the photos.

Best of luck

Hi again Edward1. I have sent you an e-mail without the photos through the forum e-mail system as I do not seem to be able to forward an e-mail to you with photos in it via the forum e-mailing system. Probably me! However if you respond to my real e-mail address therein with your real e-mail address I will forward the e-mail with the photos to you.

Cheers

Hi again Edward1. Thanks for your e-mail address.

I have forwarded you the e-mail with the photos of P6's with various door mirrors. I hope they are useful to you.

I bought these ones: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT but as I said I have not fitted them yet.

Do let me know what you think of the various mirrors and what you decide.

Cheers

I've currently got a set of bullets fitted to the bonnet. As far as I am aware my car's had them since it was new, however, I can't be too sure.

What year is your car Fraser? It is just possible your bonnet mounted ones have been there from new. The Federal spec 2000TC had them on the bonnet in its first year of sale. They'd gone by the time the brochures for '68 model year came out though. (I haven't seen any '67 model year brochures). If you're reasonably sure they are in factory original positions I'd be extremely interested in some measurements as I'm intending to do the same on Lucky's new S1 bonnet (side extract louvres and centre scoop, keping the original so I can go back to standard if required). Distance in from edge of bonnet to centre line of mirror should be easy enough but I'm not sure where to measure from for fore and aft location? And how easy are they to use? Lucky has neither wing nor door mirrors at the moment and makes do with the panoramic interior rear view mirror. This is OK on 2 lane roads but positively dangerous on multi lane and motorway, especially joining from a slip road.

The Door mirrors aren't to bad for motorway driving I felt, the mirrored surface is perhaps a tad small, but the're mounted just and the edge of the bonnet just above where the door meets. They're a bit difficult to set in place as you're adjusting the mirrors but not in the driving seat.

If you like Chris I'll put up some photos for you, as they're off the car at the moment. They're fixed by two bolts and covered in a Rubber Gasket in place between the mirror and the bonnet.

I also have a redundant bullet mirror that I don't use anymore, I can get a few shots of that, or if you like, mail it down to you to give you a reference point. The bullet casting itself doesn't have a mirror in it, that fell out somewhere on the M90 back from Aberdeen.
