Door to window seals - Fitting advice

I'm just fitting up the door innards for my car and have a couple of questions regarding the door to window seals.

1. I want to hang the complete assembled door on the car and then fit the seals last of all once the gaps and frames have been adjusted. Is it possible to fit new seals without completely removing the drop glass assembly?

2. What experience do people have of using the seals supplied by Ray Weekley. I understand they are supplied as a standard section that will need to trimming to fit and holes put in for the screws. The car had obviously already had a set of these fitted and although they aren't perished at all they'd made a bit of a lash up of trimming them. Is it that difficult to make a good job of it??

Thanks

BB

BB,

I fitted replacement seals a few years ago, I bought them from wadhams and they required triming as they were just lengths of rubber.

I didn't take the frame out and wish I had.

Mostly they were ok but right at the end I couldn't squeeze the bottom of the seal between the frame and the door so it sticks up a fraction. Also at the quarter light I had to trip a bit off the top.

I have seen other people do a good job with these seal. I have heard good reviews about the seals from Scots old auto rubber. apparently they don't have the steel inside but are thick good quality and have the holes pre cut.

I also fitted the Wadhams items & they fitted fine without taking the frame out but as it was a couple of years back I can't recall how I did it (though I think I used a wide screwdriver blade to push them right down). It wasn't too difficult though.
However, I did rush the trimming & wish I'd used a sharper ( read NEW) blade. It's hard to judge where to trim until they're fitted & of course, when they're fitted they're hard to trim effectively so it's a bit 'Catch 22'.
Pre-shaped items would be better so look at scots old rubber, but if you use a good blade & straight edge & take your time you should be o.k. You've overcome bigger challenges than this, I'm thinking BB..... ;)

A quick spray with Silicon (or even Armour-All etc.) usually allows the seal to slip between the door and frame much more easily. Worked for me!

Brilliant stuff! I'll get on with fitting the frames into the doors and get them hung.

Emailed scotts old auto rubber and get some details and post the reply on here.

Cheers

Slight problem: Shipping is $53 to the UK.

I'll give it go with a set from Ray. Like you say sharp knife and ruler (not tossing it up in the air and slashing at it with a hunting knife like the previous custodian!)

The Australian dollar is at 2.41 to the £ - so not as expensive as first glance for postage - Maybe there are others who need some rubber seals etc and can share the postage?

BB,

Scotts are good value.

Word on the classis car street is that the top Classic uk Rover suppliers get their stuff there and re-sell it to us for a profit, fair enough if they go to the effort of importing bits.

Have also heard that an item had the scotts label on it which presumably hadn't been removed before resale, compare the prices and you will see the postage is much less that the mark up.

Hi BB,
I will be/am wanting a full set of these weather seals so if you want someone to share the cost I am your man. My old man lives on the Gold Coast so I can always ask if it will work out cheaper for them to be posted to him and for him to post them on to us... You never know!

Ok Jules,

I probably won't order for a couple of weeks yet as I want to fit up the rest of the panels and decide if there any other seals that I might need.

I won't forget you asked, let you know when I place an order.

G' Day all
I can heartily recommend Scotts Old Ato etc, I have used their seals on the old Blue heap and they fit a treat. They also have the advantage that they can help with strange shaped bits of rubber for obscure cars. I wont use anything else now!
As to postage, I am in the same situation, brake bits for Rovers are impossible to find over here and it costs me $1200 for a new set of discs and assorted bits per car to be shipped over! You lot are lucky that you are not on the other side of the world to the bits you need. ;)
Still the best way to fit new rubbers is with the whole window assembly stripped and out of the car. Makes it a doddle to do.
Cheers
GUY :)

I'm going to conact Scotts again and check the delivery time on an order with a view to placing ASAP. If you are still interested Jules then let me know (I'll PM you as well)

Anyone else who wants a set as well please send me and email on bblongman at yahoo.co.uk . All I will do is split the carraige from Australia between the people ordering and we can make whatever arrangements you prefer to pass on within the UK. (either collect or I can post to you which should only be a couple of quid for a set of 4 seals).

Are you still interested in the Chassis plate Fenton?

Door to window seals arrived this morning. Well I say arrived, I had to go and collect them from parcelforces depot as there were VAT charges to pay. Apparently customs have cracked down since the rise in popularity of ebay and pick up almost everything these days.

Anyway to cut a long story short I ordered 4 extra car sets of seals. If you would like a set for your car then send me an email, the price is £70 including carraige in the UK. This is less than they'll cost you from Scotts with carraige. I am making a small profit that means I will effectively get my seals carraige free but I think thats fair reward for the (minor) trouble of ordering them and sending them on.

I did have two enquries back when I posted initially so I'll give those people preference but otherwise first come first served. If all four aren't wanted by the end of next week I'll stick them on ebay.

The seals look excellent by the way and are very neatly and accurately formed around the window frames.

Cheers

It took about 5 mins to fit the seal to the front door and it fits very well. Might get round to the others sometime this week! Got the rear windows in today so I can actually use it to go somewhere other than just blasting up and down the bypass.

Anyone got any ideas for what to do about the little seals that fit at the front and rear of the window frames. The originals have long since disintergrated into nothing. Jeff Weekly suggested sealing the gap with some sikaflex which seems reasonable but I wondered if anyone had any ingeneous solutions.

BB,

Looks like a quality job as usual.

Do you have the old seals?

As you know they have a metal strip in the centre. you could probably cut a few little bits out to make these end seals.

Just thinking, the front splash seals attach to the inner wing in a similar way, again you could cut up an old one. Modern cars are also worth a shout. My old renault 19 had a few seals that could be good, the weather strip on the door and all the door and boot seals.
