If this thing is recoed as said, it is a bargain. May be worth international shipping if it goes cheap.

I consdiered buying it, but I'd still need to hunt down various other parts, so teh Toyota swap is still worthwhile.
Regards, Andrew.

I would only buy an item that is recon with a 6mth or 1 yr warranty, it is a hell of a lot to spend and will take an age and cost a bomb! with shipping!! ??? We recently got 'given' an excellent S1 2000, factory recon box, complete with its 2000 mile clutch from a forum member that was 'known' to be good.its fitted and its fab!! :p

I've never had much luck with "recon" stuff, I've had engines and gearboxes which turned out to be nothing more than cleaned and / or painted. Even with 12mnth warranty, if you pulled an engine / gearbox from another car you'd be pretty unlucky if it lasted less than 12 months, and I think the recon boys take that gamble.

Much better to have your box / engine rebuilt by a speciallist using new parts so you can see exactly what was done. Ok so it costs a lot more, but you get what you pay for !

I'm not sure the P6 gearbox was ever fitted in the Land Rover, even the very early ones. Any L/R anoraks out there know any different.
The one advertised is an early one without the remote.
Still on the subject of gearboxes on ebay anyone seen the 3500S gearbox advertised that's a 2000 one in the picture? That's going to be a disappointment to some unlucky buyer.

Since i need a 4 cyl gearbox it may be just what i want.
So, how can you tell between a 4 cyl and 8 cyl box from a picture?

The easiest way I can think of is the bellhousing on the 2000 box has a big lump to accomodate the bendix of an inertia starter. If you're unsure post a picture or a link to the ebay item and I'll soon tell you.

Shipping won't be so bad for typhoon 'cos he's in Oz already, and $75aus. is about £25 I think.

I suppose that you are talking about this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws....=1&rd=1

right?

Since the V8 boxes were just beefed up 4 cyl boxes i was always thinking that these should be interchangeable, if you swap the bellhousings of course. Perhaps they have different input shafts too?

That's the one
and there's no way they're interchangeable, even if you could just remove the bellhousings (which you can't) the main casings are different as well. You can use parts from the 4 cyl boxes in the 3500S ones but only if you know what and where. In other words, don't even think about it! :D

yep defo a early 4 cyl gearbox..v8 the starter is on the other side and below the centre line..
