hi all,
a friend of mine has just fitted an efi set up to his p6, early range rover, flapper system. he has got it working and it runs fine on tick over, it also drives backwards and forwards fine ( slowly ), however when he accelerates in park or neutral the car cuts out, anybody any ideas !

Ian,
The first question to ask is if the car has fast idle speed from cold? That would give a good indication whether the ECT or engine coolant temp sensor is working in conjunction with the auxillary air control valve which regulates the fast idle speed during warm up. If that checks out and presuming the ignition timing is set correctly and there are definately no air leaks! I would then look at the the air flow meter which are notorious for causing running faults (the potentiometer track wears away). Another fault on this system is the ECU itself. The fueling chip packs up and the car suddenly runs either too weak or too rich. The fix is to replace the chip with a Jaguar XJS 3.6 type.. more or less a permanent cure. Those would be the first checks I would suggest. If you know how to use a multimeter with injector pulse width then go to that first.. you can watch the data during warm up to idle which will ultimately tell you how much the injectors are dumping and hence indicate if the fueling chip is indeed at fault.

hi rich,
thanks for the fast response, fast idle is working fine from start up. i will ask him to check air leaks, but looks like he may need the ecu then.

just been talking to him, the car actually when revved, revs up then cuts out but does not stop and then ticks over fine. what should be the set up for fuel injection as the carbs run at 6 degrees before tdc

The air flow meter and ecu are repairable by specialists.. try the air flow first though...easier and quicker to eliminate.
I'll be in touch when I have 5 mins Ian
