Electric Wiper Delay Unit

I was wondering,...which of the P6 / P6B Rovers were fitted with the above? The part number of the part is DRC 2026. Where was this unit fitted on the car,..within the engine bay or inside the vehicle?

Thanks in advance,
Ron.

This was on very late UK cars. I've a feeling it came in at the same time as the rocker switch for the heated rear window, but I wouldn't swear to it. They are certainly very rare indeed in captivity!

Chris

They're fitted on very very late cars indeed, and then not on all of them.

The only one I've seen in situ is on The Chatterbox (Adam Birch's 1977 2200TC, one of the last couple of hundred)

VVC700S - the certified last of line car, a 3500S, has the vacuum driven device as normal, this could be a replacement for a faulty original one, but bearing in mind it's low mileage methinks it's been on there from new.

I've never heard of these being fitted as standard. Have you found one Ron? What did they look like? How big were they?
My Sage TC had an aftermarket one fitted by the previous owner sometime in the mid '80s and it's HUGE!

Thanks Chris, Nick and KR for the info, very much appreciated.

Hello KR,

I do in fact have one,...a brand new one in its blue British Leyland box that I purchased from a P6 specialist when I was visiting Melbourne in 1990. It comes with DRC 2021 which is the required wiring loom and plug. The label on the box says..."Made In Germany". The unit itself is black plastic,..rectangular, with a metal bracket for attachment on the back. It is made by Hella. Dimensions are 4.5cm wide, 6cm long,..and that includes the fitting on the end that accepts the plug, 3cm in depth.

My intention is one day to fit it, so I wondered where it went and how it interfaced to work the wipers. Would the wiper motor also be different on cars where this was fitted given that the vacuum delay unit, if I can call it that, actuates by the sliding cam on the side of the wiper motor?

Ron.

Do a search back on the forum. I put up some photos of the delay unit.

it is a hella unit and I have seen two fitted to car 2200sc and 3500s.

Despite what you would think the Hella unit is O.E. when fitted to a cat the vacum adjustment knob is blanked off.

Interestingly my car 2200tc built Jan 1977 has vacum delay so fitting may have been random.

I couldn't find the post. It may have been lost when the fourm became the new forum back in 2008.

Hello Colin,

I appreciate the info and the pics. Yes that is the same as the one that I have, so in your car it is fitted on the O/S attached to the top of the inner guard. So is that your wiper motor that can be seen to the right of the delay unit? Is your wiper motor the linkage type? The one in my Rover is the cable type.

Thanks again,
Ron.

Ron,

It is not fitted to my car. the photo is from a friends I did a load of work on a few years back and is a 2200sc. The v8 is different as you know. The other guy I know with the V8 has it fitted. I may be able to get a photo for you but not for a few weeks.

I always rather liked the vacuum unit. It is one of those good Rover P6 talking points (a bit like the front and rear suspension layouts) which, when you explain to somebody how it works, they always look totally bemused!

I agree! Moreover, the vacuum unit has the variable delay facility, and with replacing the sponge thing, it will go on forever.
Forget the silly electronic black boxes.

Hello Demetris,

Now there is a point. I still have my vacuum delay fitted and afterall I have had the electronic one in its box for 20 years, so I am obviously not in too much of a hurry to replace it... :p

So does not the electronic unit have that very facility,...a variable delay? (in electronic form of course)

Just slightly off topic.... When I bought Lucky, my S1 V8, one of the things I was looking forward to was getting re-aquainted with the S1 wiper control. Our family '65 2000 when I was a lad had a switch which ran the wipers at normal speed in first position and then moved onto a rheostat which allowed you to infinitely vary the wiper speed from normal up to really quite incredibly fast. I thought that was really cool! But Lucky doesn't have it! Just a normal 2 speed wiper. Anyone know when the variable speed one was deleted?

Can't say for sure but my '67 and '68 cars both have the variable switch and my '70 has the 2 stage type.

I'll echo that. My '67 2000 had the variable switch, and the '70 was the later type..

my 1973 2000sc i recently purchased has a wiper delay, it works but does'nt self park i'll look in to this later, so im guessing it's been fitted at a later date?

Bruiser - 1969 - 2 speed/no rheostat ----- Squeaky wiper blades (the cure to which I heard from a Canadian, was rubbing alcohol smeared on the rubber. True?)

Hi All,
I've been in touch with Ron about the above unit, but also remembered that the P6 News carried an article on replacing the Delay unit with an electrical item back in the 80's. If any member has a copy of the article could they let me know. I can't remeber if it mentioned any model ( I think possibly 2200).
Thanks
Joe

This is great,..taking pics digitally... :D Means I can post so much easier!

Hi Ron.
I am currently looking to replace the vakuum delay unit with your shown electrical relais. I have found out, that the BMW 5WG002450-21 Hella 1353892 part seems to be identical to your shown Hella unit. You can get them used on Ebay for less than 20 pounds. What i am missing is a detailed view of the wiring loom and where the different coloured cables connect on the relais. Would you eventually have a view from behind of the connector. I know, your post is long ago, but eventually you can help me.
Thx and best regards
Christian
