Engine Number

Trying to confirm the engine number on my P6B. The number on the block has CR 8.5 :1 and 355082008B. So far as I can find this doesn't line up with the parts list. The question is this the engine number or something else. I will need the correct information to register the vehicle.
Thanks
Bruce

Hi, yes, that is the engine number. The 355 and the low CR indicates that it is a Range Rover
engine, probably a replacement in the past.

Hi Bruce,

The 1976 Rovers for the Australian market left the factory as standard with low compression 8.5:1 engines. I don't know if there was a distinction made between those blocks designated for the P6B and those for the Range Rover at that time. It could have been that Range Rover blocks were fitted as standard into the P6B.

The Australian Design Rules saw a number of changes at that time, hence the 1976 models had features that none of the earlier P6B's displayed. These are quite different from the U.K market cars, where such features did not appear.

Ron.

Thanks for that information Ron. I wonder if any other Australian or New Zealand owners can confirm if their engine numbers are in a similar number range. New Zealand built cars are easily identified by the glass having the NZ standards mark which is a bold S with a N above and a Z below.

Hi Bruce,

Another easy way to spot a NZ assembled Rover for the Australian market is the addition of a "HP" identification plate within the engine bay.

Does your Rover have a body number beginning 4532 or 4533?

Ron.

Hi Ron, Yes mine has 45330313E the ckd internal factory number is HP2125376 which from my NZ Motor Corp days I translate as the 2125th P6B built at the Nelson plant and build date of March 1976.

I doubt that any P6B left the Nelson factory with any thing other than a 9.25:1 engine after the cessation of the 10.5:1 engines.

Hi Graeme,

The 4532 and 4533 were a unique series of 1976 models destined for the Australian market, and these did indeed feature an 8.5:1 CR engine. The stricter Australian design rules being directly responsible for such.

Does your Rover have the black plastic door mirrors Bruce? It should also have the 3500S hubcaps, these being deleted on all other models during 1974.

Ron.

Hi Ron,
I still waiting on the car arriving in Perth but the photos show black mirrors and the 3500S hub caps.
Seems the number on the engine must be the original, thanks for your help in sorting this query.
