Engine upgrade

blimey, not bad for grade 1 CSE english, wont mention maths

Hi Dave, Im interested as I didnt know it can harm the paint, to be honest its a cheap imatation version but works well, I wipe a section , rinse out in warm water & continue, how does it effect the paint ? mine is cellulose, other option I thought of is a good quality cotton towel to remove the water.

Fired her up and had just on the 60 psi at 2500 rpm so happier with that.

Hi Stina,

I am assuming that you have not changed the oil pressure transmitter, so that being the case, what pressure were you typically seeing before you changed the pump?

Reason I ask is from where I am sitting, 60psi at 2500rpm is far too high especially when the engine is at normal running temperature. What pressure do you see at higher, say 3000rpm and above?

Ron.

Hi Ron

That's a very interresting comment. What makes you say 60 psi is too high? I know of reputable V8 engine builders who put much stiffer pressure relief valve springs in as a matter of course, precisely to achieve this. I can see that if you got up to very high pressures (150 psi?) then you start to put gaskets etc etc at risk, but I can't immediately think of any downsides to a very good pressure reading. I suppose you could argue that you might risk overly heating the oil, but nothing an oil cooler couldn't look after and certainly not relevant to the sort of use Stina will be making of her car. A higher pressure most certainly implies a higher flow, which is what the V8 desperately needs, especially at the top end, so where's the downside?

Chris

Hi Chris,

My understanding regarding the oil pressure is that for the RV8 with the camshaft driven oil pump, the maximum reliable pressure is 60psi at 5000rpm. The higher the pressure the greater the load imposed on the skew gears, so if Stina's engine is now delivering 60psi at only 2500rpm following the addition of the high volume oil pump, then the longevity of the skew gears will come into question.

The skew gears compose the steel gear on the camshaft and the bronze gear on the distributor, the latter one being the softer of the two will be the first to fail.

The standard P6 oil pump with factory pressure is entirely satisfactory for a road going engine, same with the SD1 and all later RV8 engines in Land and Range Rovers ( deeper gears move 25% more oil but the pressure remained essentially the same) up until circa 1994 when the crankshaft driven pump appeared.

Ron.

My understanding is that higher pressures waste away the white metal bearings and that pressures in excess of 50 PSi are not good for longevity.

Sparky runs at just over 30 PSI warm/tickover and 45-50 at running pressure, i.e. driving up the road.

Richard

Mine runs at 30ish psi at tickover and does go very high with cold oil abouve 2500 revs but always settles to the 30-40psi when warmed through. Stina, you need to get it on the road and see how it behaves on a longer drive.

Hi guys totally agree i need to take her out for a gentle run and let things settle down , just didn't have time last night . Was just shearing preliminary findings on firing her up . Up to temp on the drive doesn't equal up to temp on the road .

Hi guys , went down the road and got some juice , then on a few mile run enough to get right up to temp . Bit of hard acceleration sees 60psi on the gauge but seems to top out there , on extended tickover have just under the 30 psi , that was what i was looking for and the reason for doing the job , ill watch the top figure over the next few runs out . can still go up one thickness on the gasket between spacer plate and timing cover , ie back to a standard rover item which is twice the thickness of the kit gasket . Would mean doing it on the car , not sure of access , don't wanna crawl about looking now , had a bath :D

Damian , a pic as requested , sure you must of seen it on here before , i'm on here most days :D

Hi Stina,

WOW 8) that is stunning, I'll never say a bad word against almond again, almost wish I'd kept mine as Almond!

First pic I've seen of the car, do have a separate thread for it ? did you restore the car to this condtion ? Love the 'S' wheel trims.

Is that you stood next to car with blonde hair ? as your profile pic has red hair,
There's few shows here in Somerset, one at Hazelbury Mill this Sunday nr Crewkerne, following Sunday/weekend is the Bath & West footman James show, I'll do the sunday event.
Anyway car is really nice indeed, cheers Damian

Hi Damian , No i won't take any credit for the body work , i bought her on the condition of the body and base unit , receipts for thousands from the owner before the guy i got her from . Have done bits and pieces of chrome along the way , added the "s" trims , re furbed the wheels etc . Rebuilt the rear calipers , got the kick down working ( that's more magic than mechanics :? )
I can weld to a degree , as in stick things back together ! best they're out of sight though :?
Been working through the mechanicals since i've owned her , the engine bay was really scabby .
Link to my original thread .

No i'm not the skinny blond in the pic , i'm the 6ft shoulder bound nightmare at the end of the above thread
Go to a few shows through the season , and use her rest of the year as and when needed .
Classic cars on the prom is a regular through the summer on a sunday afternoon . Nice little run out from your home ?
Going to the Portsmouth tattoo exhibition tomorrow , husband's into all that :?

Hi All,

First up I must say that I take my hat off to you Stina!! Your work is amazing. Puts me to absolute shame

Now, on the subject of oil pressure..... My 3500 has a guage which is in kPa. When at idle it sits at about 1kPa, when cruising at about 60-70kph (30-40mph) it sits on about 3kPa.

What do these figures mean in psi :?: :?:

RT.

Woha no idea , but must be some sort of conversion table on the mighty google i guess , or not !!

Gees , guy just looked at that pic , i'm not that mean up close honest , didn't catch my best side

100 kPa is around 14.5PSI, so I would suspect your gauge reads in 100s.

300 Kpa would be 43.5PSI so no problem
