Exchange 18ACR alternator to 17ACR

I have a Rover 2200 TC 1974 which has a Lucas 18ACR alternator. Does anyone know if I can mount a 17ACR instead (which has a slightly lower charging current)? Does it charge enough?

In terms of dimensions, both are the same, so yes it will fit just the same. The 17ACR to my knowledge has a maximum current rating of circa 35 Amps, whereas the 18ACR is rated at 43 to 45 Amps. Whether the current rating will be sufficient will depend upon the ancillaries that you have and how many you choose to run simultaneously. The alternator will only deliver back the battery the amount of current that is being drawn, so provided that does not exceed 35 Amps, you won't have a problem.
