Exhaust box removal

The middle can of my 3 can exhaust is in pretty poor condition. Is it a good or a bad idea to replace this with a straight-through pipe? I've heard the standard setup is quite restrictive but I won't want to the car to sound antisocial or else just crap.
Am I right say that because a. Rover did a 2 can system and b. there is a box before the one I want to replace, I won't be affecting the scavenging of exhaust gases?

Thanks in advance

By "middle" can do you mean the one that is just in front of the back box? If so then I wouldn't replace that with a straight through section. Find another intermediate box. There are a few about. Rover went through a whole succession of different exhaust schemes early on, some 3, some 2 can. My '66 car has a 2 can system which is straight through all the way to the intermediate box by the diff. The book says it should be a 3 can system but I like the nice rasping note to the exhaust so I'm not going to change it. If I was going to do away with any of the cans in a 3 can system it would be the front one.

Hi Dave, thanks for that. Yes I do mean the box near the diff. I'll see if I can find one then. Out of interest why is it preferable to remove the front box over the middle? I'm not sure I could bring myself to remove a healthy box but perhaps I could be convinced for the rasp you mention!

I replaced the last one with a well made straight through one a few years ago. There was no noticeable increase in noise and the engine felt that it was breathing better. After a disection the rear box was found to be of a rather restrictive design.

The last of the two big boxes, or the slimmer profile one under the boot floor?

Thanks Demetris. I have looked at replacing this before. when my middle box first started to blow I was going to try and put together a single silencer affair that replaced the whole rear section. I do worry about doing a proper job as the work would be partially visible!
