exhaust leaking!

HI Everyone,

I just bought a newly restored P6 from my brother. It's a wonderfull car, but just a small problem!

There is a leak from the exhaust. Below the manifold there is like a triangle end which connects to the down-pipes. Between the 2 triangle joins (with the bolts going through them) there is a gap of about 1/2 - 1 inch, where there is an amount of gas escaping.

I've been down to the quick-fit type garade, and they have stated that I need a new seal that joins the manifold onto the down-pipe - the problem being that I've just spoke to a P6 parts specialist, and they said that there is no seal - just a metal / metal connection with fire paste!

Does this mean that I'm gonna need a new mainfold? I'm getting a new stainless exhaust from PDGough in a couple of weeks. Or does it just need a pull-apart / refit and re-seal?

any help please?!!

thanks again.

HI,
THAT IS CORRECT WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD, IT IS METAL TO METAL ( QUICK FIT TYPE GARAGES JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE OLD CARS ) IF YOU ARE GETTING A NEW STAINLESS STEEL ONE I SHOULD LEAVE IT UNTIL IT COMES, THEN WHEN YOU REMOVE THE OLD MILD STEEL EXHAUST CLEAN THE MANIFOLD OPENING WITH A SMALL FILE TO GET RID OF A BUILD UP OF RUST AND CARBON AND THEN A GOOD EMERY CLOTH. WHEN YOU OFFER THE EXHAUST UP LOOSELY FASTEN IT AT THE OTHER END WHICH ATTACHES TO THE BACK OF YOUR GEARBOX AND THEN EVENLY TIGHTEN THE THREE NUTS ON BOTH SIDES TO THE MANIFOLD, YOU SHOULD NOT NEED ANY FIRE GUM IF YOU TAKE THESE MEASURES AND FASTEN IT UP EVENLY.

As I was repairing the 4~4:1 connection we had to remove one side manifold and in the process snapped a bold however I remember there was a metal "O" ring that keeps it all airtight.

We didn't bother cleaning it up as it looked okay and all seems well. Just drilled out the old bolt and fitted a new one and tightened her upe well, drove it for at least 10 miles then tightened it up again and it's still going after 8 months of daily use!
