exhaust - won`t fit!

Hallo,
Just bought a stainless system for my 1970 2000TC, and the front link pipe and centre sections are about an inch too long! The centre silencer bump-stop bracket is also way too big and also causes problems, and the hooks fitted to it are at the wrong angles and cause the silencer to rub badly against the coil spring. Does anyone know if aftermarket systems were much different from original, point being; if I`ve got an after market downpipe then perhaps it`s a bit too long-but 2 inches!?-making it all fit incorrectly?! The system thats on the car at present fits perfectly, but is blowing and needs replaced, so surely it`s the "made to order to correct pattern"
system thats at fault? They`re having none of it though and are sending their courier to pick it up on Tuesday. Any exhaust gurus out there???
Ta, Drew :D

Didn't know anyone did aftermarket 4 cyl ss exhaust.

I have one but it was custom made by a local guy who was very good and reasonable on the price too.

Did you take photos? there was a few variations on the exhaust, it is possible they have mix and match parts. Would any of the sections fit the car with the old exhaust ?

Colin

I suppose any aftermarket system will be a bit "handmade" and will require a bit of fiddling to make it fit
The system I fitted to my 3500S certainly did and was a bit of a compromise in the way it fitted

All the stainless steel exhaust suppliers I've heard of require you to take the car to them to have the exhaust fitted. Certainly that was how I had mine done - albeit these were 2 1/4" bore so were a bit special. I have some sympathy with that approach though. There can't be a huge volume in TC exhausts spread across the whole industry (!), especially with there being at least a couple of factory iterations, so it's understandable the manufacturer wont have had enough practice to be sure of getting it right. With your system I would have said the extra couple of inches on the link pipe and centre section was completely acceptable - simply trim to fit - the problems with the centre silencer less so! I presume the sections are push fit? Or did they come with cup and cone joints? Don't forget that once fitted you ought not to have to touch the system in your lifetime; cup and cone joints are really only necessary where you anticipate wanting to change parts of the system only in the future.

With regards to the `aftermarket` exhaust. I mean the one I have currently on the car, which I presume is non-Rover original, thus being `aftermarket`? Maybe not the correct word, but hey-ho. Anyhoo, I mean if the one currently fitted has a longer downpipe/manifold, this would cause a lot of trouble in itself, especially as I`m leaving it in place! :D
But...I forgot to mention, I didn`t have my camera with me unfortunately, so I can`t send pictures to the makers, or the forum, but both the link-pipe and the centre silencer are AT LEAST one inch too long in overall length, making it impossible to fit. The tailpipe/silencer is perfect, faultless, as are the welded brackets of the linkpipe. To answer another of the questions I`ve read, it isn`t a case of trim-to-fit, that`s not how the exhaust assembles. The exhaust fitter, in the trade over 15 years said he`s `never seen a made to order exhaust as bad`! The woman I spoke to on the phone said they `rarely make mistakes on the classics as they`re so simple to make`! Well, I defy anyone to fit this one without hacking it up and welding the bugger in place!
I shall return!
Drew :D

I bought a long straight pipe from a Canadian agent of Double SS exhausts. Somewhere I have a photo showing the problem described below. At the time, I had a new short pipe (3 can system) and a rusty OEM long pipe (2 can system).

The new stainless pipe was manufactured incorrectly. They fitted a stainless flange on the front end that extended the pipe too long past the front mounting bracket and didn't allow it to fit with the fixed exhaust manifold. Being 6000 miles away from the manufacturer I had to solve the problem as follows.

I cut off both mounting brackets from the straight pipe.

I installed the pipe by attaching it with the flanges and bolts to the manifold and to the "over-the-axle" pipe as there is more give toward the back.

Then,...... I secured each bracket to the car. One bracket was attached to the rear of the gearbox and the other bracket was attached at the bell housing.

I spot welded the brackets to the pipe using my MIG welder. I removed the pipe from the car and properly welded the brackets to the pipe. Then I reassembled the exhaust system. of course I ended up with a mild steel weld on a stainless pipe.

You shouldn't have to do this............ right.......?

Eric. Right, and I won`t be! The system is getting picked up in the morning at their expense. The email sent with a follow-up email from me after my phonecall said...`Don`t worry Drew, we`ll sort it`! So watch this space. Just out of curiosity though, what sort of difference is there between the linkpipe, and the centre (or 1st silencer on a two can system) and the linkpipe and silencer on the 3 can system, as maybe they got them screwed up. I need all the info I can get incase they try to blag it! :p

Just heard from the maker and quote..."The linkpipe is too long according to our pattern so we`ll sort that. The first silencer is correct to our pattern, but we`ll shorten it for you as that`s what your car needs" :p No mention of the hanging hooks being in the wrong place and at completely different angles, causing it to foul the rear spring! Just sent them an email to hang onto it til I can get a foto to them. Anyone got a picture of the first silencer off a two can 2000TC system I could use? I don`t fancy taking it off to take one and have to reassemble it just to have it removed again!

Hmmmm,..... I don't have the photo you need of the silencer you need.
The short pipe in the three can system is the same as the two can system in that the two mounting brackets are in the same place. The difference is that the rear flange is closer to the rear bracket to allow for the centre exhaust. I made my own centre silencer arrangement by welding short pipes and flanges onto an small oval silencer that came from somewhere else. I am down to one car now and so my modified long SS pipe is on the shelf. I think I have a lifetime's supply of exhausts for my (now) 1 TC 2000. :D

Hi Drew.

They may make adjustments and send it back, but thats no guarantee it will fit this time!
Most will insist on an annual inspection/service and the replacement of rubbers,at a recognised center to keep the warranty valid!
Thats why its probably best to have it fitted at your local centre!
For a reasonable fee,it saves you the hassle, and they may be able to make small adjustments!
You dont mention the supplier whom you got this from!
Did you try any other listed suppliers?
Ive heard good things about P.D Goughs systems!
They could try to wiggle out of a claim, saying it wasnt fitted right! If you get the fitting wrong and over stress it,when it developes a crack its not covered!
I checked out a few suppliers, prices, and warranty terms for my V8.I had the info stored, and then got a virus that wiped my email stored info!!
If a s/h system was bought then the warranty is nil anyway and a diy job will see it sorted with a bit of cut and weld!
May see you at the Shepton Mallet car show this weekend if you are going! I will be there on Sat!
Cheers Dave
ps; I got that ebay item you sent me! :p :p Wouldnt mind something to fill it as well!! :D

Guaranteed Exhaust Systems. If their stuff is as good as they say it is, maybe that`s why they don`t need to fit them. It comes with a transferable guarantee, and unlike other makers, they don`t want to check it every year. As long as the guarantee card gets stamped/signed at mot time regarding the rubbers. They have said the linkpipe is too long, but that the rest is as their pattern, which they sent me fotos of, which I compared to Goughs and the patterns are spot on, except for the hanging hooks of the silencer and the bump-stop bracket, which are both way out. They`ve said it`ll be right this time, and will give me my dosh back if not. I`ve got all their emails and recorded messages when they phoned!
I can`t make it to Shepton this time, I need to work to cover management cock-ups!

Just been offered to take the car for a free fitting of the exhaust tomorrow morning. It`s gonna cost me 30 quid in fuel but should be worth it. Watch this space ???

Drew

remember to check that the fit the bump stop rubber thingy on the bracket of the rear silencer or it will rattle, rub and drive you crazy..

Colin

Colin,
They fitted a new one, the old one fell apart when trying to undo it! I now have a shiny new exhaust, sounds cool but not noisy or boy racer-ish like some, just what I wanted. Maybe a bit like putting a silk hat on a pig, but there you go, only 250 sheets and they gave me my 30 quid costs that I previously paid to get it fitted elsewhere, and my fuel money back, loads of coffee and biscuits and my chance to wander around their place, cool! All I want...not need...are some new, or better doors!! :p

Drew

Just waiting on replies, quotes from my 'E' mailshot!!
Hope to see you soon! Any weekend! The kettles always on!

Cheers Dave :D

Dave, I`ve sent you a message man. He quoted me £464.81 `all in` for V8 systems, not the cheapest, but there you go :D
