External Gearbox Linkage Access

I would appreciate any advice/suggestions on the best way to access the external gear linkage for a 72 3500 automatic (BW-35). I can see that the exhaust downpipe will need to come out. I'm hoping that the crossmember does not have to be removed as well. Any ideas on accomplishing this task are appreciated.
Thanks! Drew

If you mean removing the 3 rods and the compensator you should be able to do that without removing the exhaust. Small spanners to remove the rods from the box and the gear lever, then IIRC you can get to some of the bolts holding the compensator from over the back of the engine, and others using long extensions from the rear. Working by Braille helps a lot.

Harvey!!
I thought you had had enough of me and decided to retire from fixing my P6! Since you are up for more abuse, that is exactly what I need. There is play at the compensator. I need to find out if there is wear, or breakage or whatever. If I understand your reply correctly, I'll need to access from beneath the car as well as from above, via the space between the engine and the firewall?

The compensator can work loose on the bellhousing. With the air cleaner removed you can look over the back of the engine to get a better look.
