Fitting a PAS electirc pump

Last August I acquired a p6 3800S with manual steering. After reading all the items here on the subject of power assisted steering
I decided to go that way. I now have got 1. A PAS box. 2. An electric power pump and reservoir from an 2001 Astra(which I have seen a
photo of one fitted to a p62000) 3. The hydraulic connections for both ends.
Now my problem is this-what electric connections are needed? the pump has 5 wires as follows:- A very thick brown and red + 3 very thin wires black, blue with white trace and brown with white trace.
just to try things out I connected the thick brown and red to a 12v battery - nothing! what is the secret?
I would appreciate any help on this matter.

I suspect the thin wires trigger some sort of relay. If would be worth trying to find a wiring diagram for the Astra.

It could be to vary the assistance with speed.

I had a quick look to see if there was a wiring diagram online that might give some insight but I couldn't find one.

Hi, I was reading a thread on another forum and the guy was trying to use one of these
for another purpose and couldn't get it to work either. Upon dismantling he found a load
of electronics in there. The big wire is probably battery power and is earth return, the
smaller wires are probably signals for engine and road speed etc and is all sorted out by
the electronics. I think it would need more investigation. Would it not be easier to put a
conventional engine driven pump on?

Thank you for the replies.
No Colin, someone in the p6 club said it was much simpler when he fitted it to his 2000TC.No belt, no pully, , no separate reservoir,
much shorter pipework. In fact the results are much better- even recommending those with the engine driven pump to change!
I only hope that I can get in touch with the person that did the change and posted the pictures.

I think the Citroen Saxo PAS pump only has live and earth wires so it might be easier to make work.

It has. I had one which TRM forced me at gunpoint to sell to him, and is destined for Bruiser.

If my memory serves me right you will not get the pump to work giving a direct 12v and earth. The other wires are to do with steering angle or possibly torque sensing and a exciter wire via the alternator. Is it a TRW pump?

Yes it is a TRW pump.
I did notice a previous mention of the Citroen Saxo pump but I went for the Astra one after reading the article in the mag!

Hi, outside- inside-

Thanks for the picture Colin. My pump is similar but not quite the same electrics.
I havn't got the tools to strip down my pump.
I am awaiting a reply from the person that fitted a pump like mine and there is
a picture of it in the February edition of Driving Force (Rover P6 Club).
I am hoping that he will tell me how he got it to work!

Very true. I have asked Harvey on numerous occasions to leave his gun at home when he visits my premises but he refuses to listen.
After all, some of the stuff I buy from him, I actually want.

I have a PAS steering box, along with a pump, reservoir, etc, sitting in the garage for eventual fitting to Brown Rover. I hadn't thought of fitting an electric pump, but it sounds like the nuts. Not sure I would find a dead Saxo in NZ, so what should I look for in an alternative pump?

I might take you up on that. The conversion is coming up on the radar. The old manual box is leaking a bit, forcing me to stuff a bit of rag in behind the glove box to stop it dripping fluid onto the floor. With the ZF conversion in the bag, I've taken 2014 off to just enjoy driving the car, but the PAS box is sitting in a corner of the garage glaring at me, the old box is leaking... 2015 is looking good. How much would a Saxo pump be worth?

Warren, for our end of the world I believe the 2nd generation Toyota MR2 uses a suitable electric pump. Should be lots of them in scrapyards by now especially considering their tendency to swap ends on a damp road!
