FITTING ALTENATOR

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW I COULD GO ABOUT PUTTING AN ALTENATOR IN MY 67 P6 AND WHAT KINDS I COULD USE

PETER :(

Peter,

There should be brackets on the engine. On the manifold side just below the thermostat.

If you need a new one try LSUK. Then apparently still stock them I think it is an 11AC. but they wil have catalogues to check.

They can also fix them, I have got them refurbuishing my starter just now.

Peter.

I take it from the sounds of this that you have a dynamo on it at the mo?

It isn't THAT simple although can be done without too much trouble.

For what you will gain, my own opinion is to stick with what you have. I have ran a few classics with dynos and haven't really had a problem - as long as you bear in mind not to overload the electics in slow moving traffic.

Thats the only main benefit. With an alternator you can run the heater, heated rear, radio, wipers, lights etc while the engine is at idle without flattening the battery.

Depends what you want out of it and whether it is worth the trouble!

Who are the electics, An artistic movement perhaps? Your not alone though Johnny, try typing electics into google, should you ever have a problem with them there are plenty of specialist companies out there!

I changed my mg midget dynamo for an alternator and I didn't particularly worry about which one. It's easy enough to fabricate brackets etc and you just need to ensure accurate alignment of the belt.

Saying that I would be tempted to keep the dynamo as it is original and as Johnny says if you don't overload it won't be a problem. You also get the pleasure of working out how the regulator works and cleaning and adjusting the points. They may look complicated but once you understand how they work it is easy to diagnose and often fix any problems.

hi BB,
never mind his 'electics' what about your 'clrake' turbo mig does it clean leaves up faster. typing errors are great aren't they.

I dont own a 'not alone though' - unless you actually mean...

Dick - I thought it was you yanks that were funny, i.e. AL - OO - MINUM!

Whats all that about?

:D

Yes, But; Yes, But; etc etc.

Seriously though, my P6 will be getting a Bosch 120 A. As long as you can butcher a bracket to suit the choice is really unimportant. With dynamo and early alternators (eg 11AC) there is a seperate control box to control the charge rate - then it is very important to have a matching pair. With modern alternators (ACR series and later) charge rate is determined internally. I've gone for a big one cos I shall be running air con, air con rad fans, coolant rad fans etc simultaneously.
