Ok so it's probably really simple but how do I take the radio out so I can change it? Do I need to remove the console and take it out from behind or does the front cover come off?
The radio mounting panel unclips and comes off once all the radio knobs and securing nuts are removed, but there's often a stud fixing on the rear of the radio that supports the back of the unit which would need undoing to enable you to pull the radio out.

some times two studs at the back, well at the back, but on the side of the console, they are hexagonal and protrude around 35mm. just unscrew them.
