Flashed in France...!

On a weekend of driving in France I was unfortunate enough to be flashed by their speed cameras...! They are spot on out there and do not allow for a few MPH (or KPH!) like here in England... I could not believe it but after a 6 hour drive, and feeling particularly fatigued, I really didn't notice them (until the fatal moment)...!!! What I want to know is how likely is it that I will receive any slap on the wrists here (I was in a rental van too)...? I know that we are all linked up in one pot of EU money-making but will I get punished? I hope not but who knows...?! Have any of you good people had a continental flashing...?!

According with my knowledge the rental company will take the money directly from the credit card used when you rented the van. Of course in case they receive the fine.

Other than this I think you have not to be worried at all.

Usually when a foreign driver is hunted overspeed the Police has to stop the car and fine the driver instantly. In case the driver has not money enough the car could be sealed up or (more likely) the policeman accompanies the driver to a hole in the wall.

A neighbour of mine was zapped for speeding in Italy about a year ago while driving a hire car. She has received a fine with intrest and other charges added (about 300 euro at present and rising). Apparently the authorities got her details from the hire company. She hasn't paid it yet and is trying to find out if they can actually prosecute her. Meanwhile she got another fine for having driven down a one way street in Italy on the same holiday. Interest charges and additional charges have been added to that too. We live in UK.

I am out of date on this stuff BUT the hire company cannot take money off of you.

They have been issued with a Notice of Prosecution (NIP) and to avoid prosecution they can pass your details onto the Police. The Police will then send you an NIP.

I am not sure what happens if it occured abroad but try this mob - www.pepipoo.com - they are very clever 8)

It isn't worth the hassle -- When you get the notification -- pay up. Unless of course you will never ever visit France again.

There is always the risk - however slight - that your details (having been passed to the plod by the hire company) end up on some computer system -- years from now you get stopped by the police in France for something totally innocent -- your details come up and you find yourself in a lot of bother.

Not really answering your question here but I always think, isn't it a little unfair to expect a 40 year old car's speedometer to be accurate to within 3 or 4mph? The speedometers accuracy isn't part of an MOT test so it will more than likely never be checked after leaving the factory.
I mean, if it's so dangerous to exceed the speed limit by such a small amount that they deem it worthy of a fine and points on your licence, why isn't the speedometer tested along with all the other vital safety equipment in the MOT?

...because whatever country you're in, the local authorities have the legal right to mug anyone for the slightest indiscretion. and car drivers are the easiest prey.

I'd better shut up now before we start something

hi,
I went through a toll in the states last year without paying and the hire company took it from my visa card i used, plus handling charges $1.25 for the toll and $10.00 for the handling charges.

Well, I know of a family friend here in North Wales who got a fine from a Gatso for going a bit over the limit near Prestatyn...

By "a bit", I mean 31MPH in a 30MPH zone!

I did suggest seeing a solicitor to clarify the (in)tolerance, but apparently the solicitor suggested paying up and not making too much of it! :? :!: Maybe the Traffic Taliban... I mean... Traffic Division... sorry, I mean North Wales Police... have 'scared' some North Wales solicitors!

Yes, Wales was famously intolerant but seeing as the ACPO guidelines are 10% + 2mph, there may have been a case. Speedo's simply aren't that accurate to be able to prosecute on 1mph.

Exactly my point and what I suggested to the family friend, but the solicitor thought different... apparently... :?

I'd certainly make a massive wave if it had been me...
