Forgive me Forum, for I have strayed...

What sort of oil should I be using in this thing?

As the 4.2 will use the same flat-tappet + cam setup as the 3.5's + 3.9's then the same oil you are using for a P6B ( ie not ZDDP depleted ) will work for you

Nice addition the Fleet! Looks very tidy

Hello KR,

1994 saw the introduction of the 'interim' engines and these were fitted with a crankshaft driven oil pump. As such you have a much more efficient pump compared to the camshaft driven variety and as such the oil spec is a little different. Both 10W50 and 15W50 oils are the recommended ones for the 4.2, both in a semi synthetic such as those offered by Penrite. The reason for a semi synthetic is the operating temperature of the engine places greater stress on a straight mineral oil, so for better oil longevity and engine protection, semi synthetic is the best choice.

I'm not sure is does have the later oil pump Ron. (Rimmers suggest the changeover was late '94 so probably for the '95 model year) It certainly looks like the same front cover as my old Disco. Does that mean I should stick with the 20-50 classic? Or does the temp still make a difference?

Hi KR,

The engine overhaul manual for the 4.2 says suffix A engines have the camshaft driven pump and suffix B have the crankshaft driven pump. It doesn't specify years but different countries receive vehicles at different times. So for the former, 20W50 is the correct one as the oil pump is best suited to a 20 weight oil. Not sure if you'll find that in a semi synthetic, so a good quality mineral like Penrite HPR30 which is actually a 20W60 oil and what I use in my 4.6 would be the way to go.

Ooooh, me like!! Love the shape of the classics so def a good compliment to any fleet.

I suspect yours is pre the 94/95 changeover since the dash changed markedly at the same time to the "soft dash" Discovery style one I think.

I'd be tempted to stay with the springs even though you will be losing a good bit of ride quality, the EAS at that time was a world of pain. I still see an LSE from time to time being driven around Melbourne on its bump stops, have never ever seen it at normal height. :)

I like your Range Rover Kiwi. I've only a limited understanding of the air bag suspension but it doesn't seem that complicated, just misunderstood, and I'm sure you won't be able to resist trying to refit it!

2nd'd, expensive parts + unreliable system

Hey Al
Your new Range looks excellent !(Go the All Blacks) Welcome to the complicated world of Range Rover.
I also fell for a Range a few months back 96 P38 all original & mint condition .Absolutely love It !! have been tinkering round a bit inc. rebuilding brake modulator, an Ausi guy produces an excellent kit for these only $120 instead of a few K .Took headlining out and had redone and yes have had a play with EAS ,new Arnotts air bags on back and a few new O rings here and there plus a kit for compressor pump now all works very well.Engine is good just a good service couple of hoses and replaced inlet manifold gasket.
Have found parts at good price in UK with our $ being so strong Island 4x4 are excellent no tax or customs if you stay under $500 great service. Linzi picked up a new key from Guy Salmon UK while over on holiday for less than half what it would have cost here.
So am very happy with Range now that I have my head around it there is excellent support on the net.
Have been using to pull out a few tree stumps and tow the caravan my dog wont travel in any other vehicle now I think she feels a bit superior .
Fits in the shed with the P6s they dont seem to mind.
There are some excellent camping spots up here in the North Al so no excuse not to pop in for a beer !!!
Catch ya, Phil

I had heard mixed things about the air susp. But a few knowledgable types did suggest that it could be all sorted with some seals and a clean. Unfortunately I think the only part of mine remaining is the switches on the dash so unless I can find a complete setup for minimal money, it probably won't happen. I've seen new bits on TM but it's about $400 each for the bags and $650 for the pump. Maybe I should fit one of those hydraulic 'lowrider' systems instead.
She runs a lot better with the new leads now which is good. We went for a bit of a tiki tour yesterday to get the feel for it. The dog can jump into the back which is great, unfortunately she can also get into the front, which isn't. We left her in the car for half an hour and came back to find her sitting in the drivers seat and dog snot all over the newly cleaned windows. :x I think I will be investing in a dog guard soon.
I think I will go to Stag 4x4 on monday with a shopping list and see what happens. I have a power steering leak (common I believe) but it appears to be coming from one of the flexible hoses, not the box. I found another US spec right hand indicator on Ebay so that is on it's way. The stereo is stuffed so that will have to be changed soon, although I haven't tired of the exhaust note yet...
Phil, I have been that far north for years but my beloved and I go camping just north of Waipu every year around late Feb, so maybe we could catch up sometime around then.

Hmm... need to get those windows tinted... hydraulic suspension for the slammed/lifted look... smoke dem indicator lenses and tail-lights, innit.

Forsooth, one is descending to a previously unplumbed depth of plebeian colloquialism...

Still haven't got the windows done yet. :( But I have achieved a few other things. One of the things that bothered me when I bought it was that it sounded like it had a slight misfire and made a kind of metallic spitting noise in the exhaust when you tickled the throttle. This, i suspect was from one of the Cats collapsing so I had them both removed and replaced the huge centre muffler with a Flowmaster. Result! The noise and miss is gone and it sounds like a proper V8, especially from idle to 1500rpm which is where It spends most of it's time.
I had a good chat with Stag 4x4 who were very helpful but don't really have any parts for the old Classics any more so I took it out to see Bramble Downs 4x4 in Waitakere. They were very impressed and enthusiastic and furnished me with a bunch of small trim items and a handbook so I will definitely be back to see them again when i have made a proper list. Other that that she has been getting used on weekends and keeping the local petrol stations in business while the TC does the regular work commute during the week.
