Four speed auto box for V8

would have thought a few auto boxes form more modern cars ought to fit? e.g. land rovers? after all do or did they not have the original V8 rover engine but enlarged to 3.9. ?

the rear of the box is 4 wheel drive centric on those cars. Also many new boxes require electronics to drive them.

Rover only used the BW35, BW65 or ZF 4HP behind the Rover V8 to my knowledge. Later variations came from Jaguar.

The ZF is becoming almost an "industry standard" on old British cars. Rovers, MGs, Triumphs and Jaguars have all been done.

One possibility that I haven't seen is the AW70 box which Volvo fitted to many cars which previously used BW variants. The AW70L like the ZF is 4 speed with lockup.
However the ZF is simply more modern and better.

One practical limitation is that modern transmissions work with the engine ECU to respond better to dynamic conditions and to shift more smoothly. It's difficult to work around this more than a simple throttle position sensor. Early ZF HP4 models have a mechanical control block similar to the BW35/65 and its this along with the bellhousing compatibility that makes the conversion viable. You are unlikely to see the current Mercedes 9 speed in a P6 any time soon at least without the Merc engine with it.... Sadly...
