Front Air Intake - What Is That Rubber Bit?

Took the front air intake cover off the other day during my windscreen replacement project and found a very very crumbly rubber strip on the underside. Only option was to bin it. The rubber was attached to a metal channel. What is this item for? Thks

Think you mean the metal channel which sits on the bottom of the windscreen which keeps the water which runs down the screen from going into the heater box by allowing the water to run along the channel to either wing. Yes you need it.

Hi all. Attached is photo showing underside of scuttle with traces of black at the edge where rubber bit was attached. Also in shot is the metal strip that the rubber bit was attached to. This metal strip fits quite nicely under the windscreen glass so I am wondering if I have found my windscreen support channel (per my other post about windscreen replacement). Maybe my problem is that the previous owner didn't re-assemble the screen properly last time and the this is where he/she thought the support channel should go.

So.. can anybody advise if there should be a rubber strip struck to the edge of the scuttle where mine was?

Thks

Hi roll.

I suspect we can only see a fairly small part of your picture. Can you re-attach it after reducing it in size a bit? I use Microsoft Photo Editor to do mine, which you should have for free with a bit of luck!

That said, I can't visualise how this has been assembled on your car. The curved steel channel should have a rubber liner in it and be attached to the base of the screen as a load spreader for the two jacks that hold the screen up and in place. Definitely not attached anywhere to the front decker. The only attachment to the front decker should be a roll of rubber to the front top edge, sealing against the bonnet so that angine bay fumes are not drawn in to the air intake for the heater. There should also be a flat rubber seal between the base of the screen and the body that carries the afore mentioned lip to divert water running down the screen from falling straight into the heater box. The assembly diagram is in the spare parts manual here:

I haven't got one of them  , there is nothing attached to the front decker except the two rubber grommets where the windscreen wipers emerge. There is a seal attached to the bonnet which seals against engine fumes though.

This is the rubber seal at the base of the screen

Without this, the heater and the bulkhead are in serious danger of tin worm attack.

Beg pardon folks! I'm upside down. The rubber I was talking about is attached to the bonnet, not the decker. Serves the described function though, and is the same section as the rubber across the front of the bonnet. Basically an extruded balloon that has a knib running along it that squeezes into a tight little channel.

JR Wadhams sells the windscreen lower seal; it is a good quality part. It is also worth cleaning the rust and old paint from the steel channel and giving it a repaint before assembly. As the man said above, essential kit to prevent rainwater munching the bulkhead and heater steel.

Ok - took a day off driving to avoid confused people on the road...

and painted newly found windscreen support channel with zinc paint - should now last longer than the car. Fitted rubber strip to metal support channel and screen to base unit rubber. Both rubbers from Scotts Old Rubber in Oz. Highly recommended.

So.. took better photo of underside of scuttle. Should this have any rubber attached? If so I assume it needs to be glued as there are no obvious "attaching points". Rgds
