Yes, that's it. On my 4.6, I use both the oil thrower on the crank and a neoprene lipseal fitted into an SD1 timing cover. Be sure to prime the oil seal by using Shell Retinax LX grease, filling the space between the seal lips completely. According to Land Rover and the 4.6 engine manual, no other type of grease is to be used.

Ron, thanks for that, I will replace the rope seal and use the oil thrower. Is the shell retinax grease required for a rope seal? I dont want oil leaking, timing cover is a bit of a pain to take off and put back! Another 4.6 into a p6 - what carb are you using? or is it fuel injected? Im considering edelbrock 500 as I already have a manifold.
