Front crank seal

I'm refitting the timing cover having rebuilt the motor (4.6 yey), is it only the rope gasket that seals the crank at the timing cover hole? thanks Andrew

If it's a P6B timing cover it has the rope seal and an oil thrower on the crank. Later covers had a neoprene lipseal which can be fitted to the early cover by removing the retainer for the rope seal. With the lipseal you don't use the oil thrower.

Ok,it is a p6b cover but I'm using a 4.6 crank. So it wont have the oil thrower im guessing. Go with the later seal in that case?

Ahh hold on, the oil thrower.... does it look like a saucer that slides over the the end of the crank? I have that fitted, so It's good to go - thankyou.

Hi Andrew,

Yes, that's it. On my 4.6, I use both the oil thrower on the crank and a neoprene lipseal fitted into an SD1 timing cover. Be sure to prime the oil seal by using Shell Retinax LX grease, filling the space between the seal lips completely. According to Land Rover and the 4.6 engine manual, no other type of grease is to be used.

Ron, thanks for that, I will replace the rope seal and use the oil thrower. Is the shell retinax grease required for a rope seal? I dont want oil leaking, timing cover is a bit of a pain to take off and put back! Another 4.6 into a p6 - what carb are you using? or is it fuel injected? Im considering edelbrock 500 as I already have a manifold. Andrew

Hi Andrew,

There is no mention of using that specific grease on a rope seal, but I would imagine that a rope seal would still need to be primed beforehand.

My Rover has been running with the 4.6 for 7 years now, and brilliant it is too! :D It runs twin HIF6 carburettors, different float settings, polished needles to suit. The Rover manifold is very good, but the edelbrock that you have is even better, so running the 500 will really boost your engine's potential in terms of power output.
