Front seat recline mechanism

My front seat reclining mechanisms are not adjusted correctly. The passenger one reclines but it's a wrestle. The drivers one is stuck in a very laid back driving position, the lever doesn't seem to unlock it at any point in its movement.

I presume this should be a fairly easy fix, but my workshop manual doesn't have anything about the seats.

I'm trying to track down a good manual on ebay but am utterly confused by the many incarnations and unsure which one is the best for my 1973 2000 auto.

How long have the seats been in those positions without adjustment?
Its probably due to lack of use, that they have both got very stiff!
Take off the triangular cover each side of the seat to see the tilt mechanism.
You will see where it slides,so give each area a good dose of WD40 and with the levers in the up position, you may need to exert some force to make the seat back tilt.
Once its moving operate it through its full movement plenty of times vigorously to loosen it up again!
Then once its moving ok,give it a smear of grease along the long arc of metal where it slides!

I have no idea how long the seats have been in their positions - it's a new car for me.

Thank you - I'll give what you say a try.

The levers need usually to be in at least the vertical position to completely release the torque tube mechanism ( which incidentally is quite complicated ) . It is not a big job to take a seat out, and then with it upside down it is much easier to work on . Whatever you do, DO NOT dismantle the torque tube mechanism unless you have copies of the pages in the Rover factory manual which deal with this

Which is the best factory manual to own for a 1973 2000 auto - there are so many variations on ebay.

There is really only one factory manual, produced by the Rover Company , although I believe it came in different editions as the years went by . It is a very large book of perhaps 300 A4 pages, and although it is not absolutely infallible, it is indispensable if you are going to do a lot of work on your car. Try Amazon and ebay for second hand copies and expect to pay between about £16 and £30
